Today we’re covering big news on DC’s alleged manipulation of crime statistics, Justice Alito’s rebuke of Justice Jackson, and an interesting photo of a Trump administration official in front of a map of Cuba.

DC CRIME AND UNJUST PUNISHMENT

Washington, D.C.’s police department is reportedly trying to fire multiple officers that they claim were involved in the manipulation of crime statistics to downplay the nation’s capital’s violent crime problem.

Assistant Chief LaShay Makal and Second District Commander Tatjana Savoy were placed on administrative leave due to a possible connection with crime statistics investigations led by the city, the Department of Justice, and Republicans in Congress, the Washington Post reported.

Former Third District commander Michael Pulliam, who was previously placed on administrative leave over the crime statistics issue, also faces termination, the outlet reported.

The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) was accused of misclassifying crime or changing crime classifications to reduce the city’s violent crime rates.The city’s allegedly artificially lowered crime rates were used to argue against President Donald Trump’s decision to send in the National Guard to help make the city safer.

The Daily Caller exclusively reported in October 2025 how D.C. police were manipulating data. Sources told the Caller that directives to reduce crime numbers were “pervasive from the top, all the way down.” One method was that responding officers were required to call supervisors on scene to be able to charge someone with a violent crime, the sources said. Officers were sometimes berated in front of their colleagues when violent crime numbers in their area were considered too high, they explained.

However, the wave of actions ostensibly taken against crime statistics manipulation Tuesday may be little more than CYA, a source familiar told the Caller …

Pritzker has given six and seven-figure sums to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC), and the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and also appears to be throwing his financial weight around key Democrats in what would be early primary states for a presidential contest.

“It is notable that almost all of the House Democrats being financially backed by Pritzker either hold vulnerable seats in red states, are key allies of House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, or are senior lawmakers in early Democratic Party presidential primary states,” Daily Caller Senior Politics Editor Will Upton reported.

The major donations, political strategists told the Caller, suggest Pritzker is trying to buy early support from Democratic leadership before he squares off against potential primary opponents like Govs. Gavin Newsom of California, Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan, and Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania.

Greetings, Dear Reader,

We’re going to dedicate Tuesday to my favorite subject.

HISTORIC FIRST BLACKS

It would have been a good week for historic first blacks, if they’d have just let Victor Glover do the talking.

Glover just piloted the first orbit of the Moon for NASA since 1953. It’s an incredible achievement … with an asterisk: Glover is black. He also had with him a Canadian and a woman, two other firsts for NASA, but Glover’s blackness is unignorable in an ignorant press.

A young girl asked him recently during a press conference, “How does it feel to be the first person of color to fly around the Moon?”

You can forgive the young lass. She’s innocent. Adults almost certainly polluted her. It’s a waste of a question. How does it feel? I would imagine almost exactly like it feels for a white man. So mind-bogglingly, butt-clenchingly terrifying that only a special breed of human being can stomach it. Neil Armstrong. Alan Shepherd. Buzz Aldrin. Victor Glover. I’d guess they all felt nearly identical levels of suppressed panic.

“Amaya, thank you for the question,” Glover began. “I will tell you one of the things about swinging for the fence and hitting a home run when the game is on the line, if you think about that, that can add pressure and make you not go up there and play your best game.

I focused a lot on working with this team and trying to be a good teammate, be a good teammate to them and receive from them their good teamwork. And I think one of the reasons we were successful is we spent a lot of time thinking about us and not me individually.

So if I could give a good visual, I would say I spent a lot of time thinking about this patch,” he gestured to the NASA patch, “and this patch,” then to the American flag, “and not this patch,” he finally gestured to his nametag.

I salute you, Victor, you are a class act and an example for all Americans. It was the first time he addressed race directly since April 3, almost exactly a month earlier. It would have been a high note for HFBs if not for one KBJ.

Historic First Black Woman SCOTUS Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson asserted herself in a situation just days later that was itself historic on many levels. First, SCOTUS ruled April 29 in the Louisiana v. Callais case that House seats could not be drawn on the basis of race. The ruling set the state up to redraw maps to adhere to the Constitution prior to the midterms.

All of this is normal.

The court’s liberals, Jackson, Kagan and Sotomayor, dissented. (What’s a liberal for historically if not for racial segregation, amirite?!)

The plaintiff in the case, Callais, petitioned the court to issue the judgement forthwith, rather than abide by the standard 32-day waiting period. This period exists so losing parties have time to form an appeal. The defense not only chose not to oppose the request, but previously indicated no intent to even file an appeal.

SCOTUS granted the procedural request and, in a move that might just be literally historic, Jackson actually wrote a dissent to the routine procedural approval.

To talk you in, procedural matters are almost always issued unsigned without any written opinions or dissents. The step itself is extraordinary, but then you read the content (and wow! It’s a scorcher).

Jackson accuses the court of “throwing” the state into “chaos,” of “unshackling” itself from usual “constraints.”

“The Court unshackles itself from both constraints [Rucho and Purcell principles] today and dives into the fray. And just like that, those principles give way to power. Because this abandon is unwarranted and unwise, respectfully, I dissent.”

Respectfully? In this course of action, she ironically found herself in stark minority. Her liberal cohorts opted not to sign on. She went it alone, and alone she took what came next.

Alito, Thomas and Gorsuch issued a rebuttal, with Alito writing:

“The dissent in this suit levels charges that cannot go unanswered.”

“The dissent would require that the 2026 congressional elections in Louisiana be held under a map that has been held to be unconstitutional.” (With a footnote: “That constitutional question was argued and conferenced nearly seven months ago.”)

“Instead, the dissent offers two reasons for its proposed course of action. One is trivial at best, and the other is baseless and insulting.”

On the “trivial” 32-day rule argument: Alito notes the rule’s main purpose is to allow time for a rehearing petition, which the opposing side hasn’t signaled they’ll file, and that early voting deadlines have already passed with the general election only six months away.

He then flipped the “appearance of partiality” charge: “But the dissent does not explain why its insistence on unthinking compliance with Rule 45.3’s default rule does not create the appearance of partiality (by running out the clock) on behalf of those who may find it politically advantageous to have the election occur under the unconstitutional map.”

Then he took on her most aggressive rhetoric in proportion: “The dissent goes on to claim that our decision represents an unprincipled use of power. ... That is a groundless and utterly irresponsible charge.”

“What principle has the Court violated? The principle that Rule 45.3’s 32-day default period should never be shortened even when there is good reason to do so? The principle that we should never take any action that might unjustifiably be criticized as partisan?”

The closing stroke: “The dissent accuses the Court of ‘unshackl[ing]’ itself from ‘constraints.’ ... It is the dissent’s rhetoric that lacks restraint.”

SHEESH

The barbs are liable to be the talk of the town this morning.

Sitting atop this pie of abnormality from the court is that it’s unusually rare in modern times for SCOTUS writing to appear so … personal and direct. Ruth Bader Ginsburg was famously very close friends with Antonin Scalia. God rest both their souls, they’re probably turning in their graves right now. While SCOTUS disagreements have taken a flourish from time to time, they almost never blossom into direct attacks.

I wish I had a moment to take in the sheer audacious effect and corrosiveness ascending Gay Race Communism has had on our institutions, but then my social media was flooded with images from the annual parade of Uber Elite Dipshits Dressed In Ridiculous Clothing at the Met Gala.

I should bring this hulk to a close. We’re going long now.

Notes on the Met Gala:

They viciously protected its borders. PETA, the animal rights organization, showed up as a nearly nude woman. Were those pasties made without harming animals? Travis Kelce has officially transitioned from the NFL’s most prolific tight end to a gay transgender peacock.

I gave you a pass on the Pfizer commercials, but now you’re dead to me, Travis.

But the belle of the ball was the final boss of Historic First Blacks.

Ladies and gents, I give you: “Aariana” Rose Philip, a gay transgender black quadriplegic gay disabled black gay misshapen man in a dress on a robotic wheelchair.

Here’s another image of this dude for good measure.

That last one is from a high-profile interview he did in which he talked about being good at scholastics in school but then found his calling when he saw a tranny on TV. No, I’m not shitting you, complete with panty flashes for the camera.

This should be the last first black we ever have to hear about; a runway supermodel who can’t walk and isn’t a woman and probably would have been a pretty good scientist if Gay Race Culture didn’t pollute his brain.

We aren’t allowed to pause to question the outcome, however. That would be bigoted.

The last time Victor Glover addressed race in a question was the last time I saw his facade crack. Abnormal for high-stress pilots. I know a B2 pilot. It’s impossible to read the guy.

But Glover let out an infinitesimal sigh when he took the mic. It was almost imperceptible. I’ve done thousands of interviews though and I caught it.

“It is a big question and I want to highlight one facet of this is ‘the tension’ I call it,” he said. “I live in this dichotomy between the happiness that a young woman can look at Christina,” he gestured toward his female teammate, “and just physicalize her passion or her interest or even if it isn’t something she wants to do, she can just go ‘girl power’ and that’s awesome, and that young brown boys and girls can look at me and go, ‘hey, he looks like me and he’s doing what?’

And that’s great, I love that, but I also hope we are pushing the other direction that one day we don’t have to talk about these firsts.

“That one day this is just,” his composure broke again, astoundingly, “listen to this! … that this is the HUMAN history. It’s about human history. It’s the story of humanity. Not black history not women’s history, but that it becomes HUMAN HISTORY.”

That was the last time, by my measure, Glover directly addressed race in a statement.

I bet he’s getting tired of it.

I look at the lost potential of Mr. Philip, contorted into lingerie and displayed for all to see, and I see lost human history. I look at hyperracial partisans literally fighting in the highest court to keep us divided by race, and I see lost human history.

I look at Glover, and I see it restored.

I wish I could say he’ll be our last first, but something tells me other firsts will want to spoil the party.

Everyone knows that men can’t drive and that Latinas are cool-tempered to the point of frigidity.

Of course, these aren’t stereotypes associated with either group. A joke based on the premise that men are poor drivers would make little sense, because it references a broadly held belief which does not exist.

If this all sounds a little obvious: Yes.

Yet the Saturday Night Live writers have, in their quest to avoid being funny at a non-white group’s expense, failed to understand this basic concept.

Comedian Aziz Ansari appeared on SNL this Saturday as director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Kash Patel.

“You guys should not be reporting the lies and the gossip. You should be reporting on the historic nature of my appointment,” Ansari-as-Patel briefs the audience.

“I am a trailblazer. I’m the first Indian person to suck at their job.”

“Everyone says Indian people are smart, hardworking, incredibly intelligent. I’ve proved, without a shadow of a doubt, that we can be just as incapable and incompetent as the whites.”

Certainly, there’s an idea that East Asians (the Chinese, Japanese, and Koreans in particular) are good at math or strive for perfection in school. Indians, and their American-born children, probably do share in some of that striver-culture.

Think of Vivek Ramaswamy’s Christmas Eve post instructing Americans how to fix their culture: Stop venerating prom queens and jocks, start venerating nerds, put your kid in intensive academic extracurriculars, etc.

But I grant that a non-insignificant portion of Americans probably find value in Ramaswamy’s prescriptions.

There are other, even less flattering stereotypes commonly associated with India and Indians. A YouTube video exhibiting India’s “MOST UNHYGIENIC [sic]” street food has over half a million views. This is a genre.

Then, there are the stories of female tourists being raped and/or brutalized while on vacation in India.

And if you’ve perused X in the past two years, you’re likely familiar with other accusations lobbed at Indians — take a look at the replies under this clip of Ansari on SNL for a sample of typical remarks.

That’s all to say: The American perception of Indians is not universally positive. It’s a mixed bag. It is okay — and possibly even funny — to acknowledge that fact.

But we don’t come to SNL to laugh. We come to SNL for moral instruction.

Ansari himself seems aware that there are negative stereotypes associated with Indians. He was a vocal critic of “The Simpsons’” Apu Nahasapeemapetilon. Apu is a convenience store owner. He is hard-working, but sometimes manipulates and scams his customers. He was, for some time, an illegal migrant.

But it appears the SNL writers have no desire to invoke negative stereotypes about non-whites, even for the sake of a joke.

Self-aggrandizement can be funny, even charming, when it’s done in a self-aware manner. SNL disguises self-aggrandizement as self-deprecation.

It’s a little like a woman with brown hair saying: “I know that everyone thinks women with brown hair are really smart and virtuous and good-looking, but honestly, on the inside, I’m more like one of you stupid and immoral blondes.”

Not to mention, SNL’s obligatory jab at the incompetence of “the whites” (another stereotype which, so far as I’m aware, does not really exist).

The late Norm Macdonald was the master of the stereotype joke.

Welcome back to State of the Day, where I promise to strip the euphemism and misdirection off the day’s news. Here I’ll always give it to you straight up; no ice and no mixer.

Have you ever wondered what the world would look like if we carried off the left’s wishes to their foreseeable conclusion?

KATIE WILSON, ILLEGALS, RAPISTS AND MURDERERS

A visibly off-kilt Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson looked like she wanted to run.

Local reporter Chris Daniels first asked her about a shooting that had occurred. Days earlier, Wilson was at a community center announcing a raft of new “free” services the government planned to provide when shots rang out. She was quickly scuttled away from the event.

Daniels asked her how she was doing after the shooting. She looked shaky, but gave a standard reply on “gun violence.” He then began to ask her about surveillance cameras, and that’s when it looked like she might take flight. He said members of the community wanted them for safety purposes. Her staff intervened, cutting the interview short.

Wilson’s stance on surveillance cameras is interesting. I, for one, am not a fan of surveillance in any form. But Wilson isn’t particularly because she’s worried “federal immigration officials” might access and “abuse” the information – See: Arrest and deport illegals they identify on camera.

It was the second awkwardly viral moment for Wilson in the last couple weeks. The first was from an appearance she made at Seattle University.

“I think the claims that millionaires are gonna leave our state are, like, super overblown. And if, the ones that leave, like, byeee,” she said.

The quote prompted Seattle AI founder Jesse Proudman to speak out.

“It’s incredibly insulting. The reality is everyone I know who has the means to leave has either left or is in the process of leaving,” he said.

The data decidedly backs him up. Washington is currently ranked 50th of 50 states for “business survival rate,” according to anonymously-run, crowd-sourced anti-tax site LeftWashington.org.

So what’s left for cities like Seattle, Portland, LA and New York City? What happens if all their political wishes and desires play out?

The problem facing Marxists like Wilson (and Mamdani and so on) is the wealthy labor they want to tax can vamoose like a fart in a hurricane. The S&P Index used to be dominated by manufacturing, industrials, and real estate. Those are not industries that can just pick up and leave at the drop of a hat. Factories and homes take planning and construction and contracts and regulatory hoops.

But starting in the 80s and 90s, services overtook the previously dominant markets in the S&P. Healthcare, finance, tech, and communications exploded.

The people dominating those industries can live anywhere. They’d prefer to live in cities, but their kind of work doesn’t require it. They can up and move to Nashville. They can go to Texas or Florida. They can achieve the same exact outcome from thousands of miles away without all the regulations and taxes and, let’s be honest, petty crime, homelessness, vandalism, rape and murder.

And it’s not just the highly mobile service industries either. Retail is also taking flight. Pharmacies are shutting down across the street from courthouses! Walmart is leaving. Target is leaving. Seattle’s own Starbucks is leaving. Starbucks!

These are not businesses that are contracting nationwide. In fact, most are growing. They’re fleeing the results of bad urban policy.

It’s an acceleration of what Columbia finance professor Stijn Van Nieuwerburgh called the “economic doom loop.” He was referring specifically to urban flight following covid, but the results are the same. As wealth takes flight, it takes productive labor with it. As they all flee, property value plummets. The tax base – which Wilson needs for all her “free” stuff – shrinks.

What’s left?

In the urban hellscape I see, all that’s left is “highly educated” Marxist women, illegals, rapists, murderers and thieves. The “free” stuff is financed through municipal debt, which gets more and more insane. Imagine selling the entire city’s parking meters to a foreign country for a loan of just a billion dollars. (Chicago did something just like that, actually.)

Debt, Marxist women with student loans, the poor and vulnerable who literally can’t leave, and … violent antisocials.

That’s what’s left of once great American cities if Wilson gets what she wants.

Whenever I read a study that shows people on the left are getting married less than the right, I’m not really shocked. If you’ve been paying close attention to the “culture wars,” you could see this coming from a mile away. The left, which controls the levers of our entertainment and media, is largely not buying into the foundational aspect of starting a family: marriage.

Brad Wilcox of the Institute for Family Studies released a report May 1 on a study showing that the marriage divide in America isn’t just about class. It’s also about culture. Wilcox opined about a debate between progressive activist Harry Sisson and conservative commentator Isabel Brown at the University of Virginia. While one would assume neither were going to agree with much, Sisson made the case that the left actually does want the traditional life of marriage and children in the same way conservatives do.

And while that may be true in Sisson’s case or anecdotally within his friend group, the IFS study shows a massive divide between what Sisson sees and reality.

From Wilcox on the IFS study’s findings:

I think it’s actually a good sign that Sisson believes so deeply that, aside from radical voices on the left, his side has a positive view of marriage. It shows that there is at least some hope for this world. However, he cannot ignore the glaring problem that he represents a growingly small portion of the left that believes in marriage and the benefits it provides for children.

My long-time readers know that I view marriage as the greatest blessing of my life. My husband is strong, protective, and compassionate. But it’s more than just what I get out of the deal. As I said in my Tuesday newsletter, our children benefit from growing up in a home where they know, without question, that their parents love each other and will never leave the sacrament they entered into.

Living this example has created the foundation through which their lives grow. Our marriage and the values we instill through it ground our family during our hardest moments and joyful triumphs. If the world is spinning around them, they know without worrying that there is a safe landing to come home to.

But our modern world does not feel the same way. While Sisson claims it’s only radical voices demonizing traditional life, he seems to be willfully ignoring the reality of our digital world.

If you haven’t seen the television show Mad Men, set in New York City at the peak of the advertising industry in the 1960s, all you need to know is that every character – from the creative directors to the partners, the copywriters to the secretaries – drinks a lot. And I mean, a lot. Drinks in the morning. Drinks at lunch. Drinks in the afternoon. Drinks in the evening. Nervous drinks before a meeting. Celebratory drinks afterward.

It all sounds terribly dysfunctional. But during this Mad Men era, when many Americans were, in fact, more likely to get zooted at lunch, and it wasn’t so taboo to have a liquor cabinet in your office, GDP was humming at a red hot 5%. We were in the post-WWII golden age. People might have drunk more between 9 and 5, but were still wildly productive, and perhaps drinking made them better problem solvers. Anecdotal evidence suggests that mild intoxication can actually have creative benefits. From a 2017 study:

Alcohol impaired executive control, but improved performance in the Remote Associates Test, and did not affect divergent thinking ability. The findings indicate that certain aspects of creative cognition benefit from mild attenuations of cognitive control, and contribute to the growing evidence that higher cognitive control is not always associated with better cognitive performance.

In other words, a little bit of alcohol makes the creative part of your brain light up. Obviously, it seriously impairs your ability to operate heavy machinery, for example. But it might help in other ways, such as figuring out a complex logistical problem or helping soothe your nerves in a meeting with a potential client.

Years ago, in the Daily Caller office, I had a couple of drinks and was slightly tipsy on a Friday evening. I was about to head home, but a legendary reporter got a major scoop – actually, a very infamous scoop about extracurricular behavior in the Senate room – and the story needed to be rushed to the website before another news outlet beat us to the punch. I got roped into editing it, of course, and unfortunately, I saw things I wish I hadn’t seen. Trust me, there’s a reason why I am not linking to the story. Maybe you astute sleuths know what I mean. I recommend you don’t try to figure it out, however.

Anyways, there was a crucial, necessary balance to be struck between posting the story fast while making sure it was accurate and legally bulletproof. In this hectic scenario, my tipsiness actually worked to my advantage. I entered a kind of flow state, where I could suddenly juggle five different tasks all at once while messaging with the reporter and talking with the editor-in-chief, who was at his desk, practically bouncing out of the chair, cackling hysterically because it was just such an insane and shocking video, and we all knew it was going to break the internet in half. And it did.

My point is, I’m not calling for people to become hardcore alcoholics – that would be grossly irresponsible. But I just want to pose the question: what is really the harm of mild intoxication at lunch time or in the office if a worker doesn’t just stay productive but is actually more productive, creative, and better suited to handling higher-pressure tasks? What if there are real benefits?

The Greek historian Herodotus once observed that the Persians always debated things twice: once while sober, and another time drunk. The Founding Fathers certainly enjoyed their libations while building a new form of government from scratch. Winston Churchill was buzzed all day as he marshalled the world against Hitler. And I once encountered a hilarious anecdote about British traders who would drink beer at lunchtime before the U.S. markets opened because the alcohol gave them the courage of a lion. If I were making 8-figure trades, I would need a pint or two.

Maybe the people running our country could also use a pint or two. Maybe Washington might actually come up with creative ways to solve problems, as opposed to just printing more money, if it still believed in the three-martini lunch. Maybe we should go back to the Mad Men days.

Apologies for missing yesterday too. Not off to a great comeback, eh? Something came up, couldn’t make it. Such is life. You have to take the Ls like men.

One of the things I try to do here at SOTD is highlight things most of the wider (political) media isn’t covering much or isn’t covering aggressively enough.

Sometimes that’s because it’s too hard to explain, too hard to cover, or both. Other times it’s just not sexy enough. Activist judge releases criminal illegal alien murderer back onto the streets is right over the plate, slow as heck, easy dinger.

Chinese super soldier AI-brain chimps not so much.

MEANWHILE, CHINESE SUPER CHIMPS

From the get, I personally think transhumanism is an overblown subject.

Even as the assumption is that technology will inexorably and rapidly and interminably advance, I just don’t think we’ll ever reach true Robocop levels.

That being said, the Pentagon is super anxious about a recent high-visibility defection to China. First, renowned Harvard brain researcher Richard Lieber was convicted in 2021 for lying to authorities about payments he’d received from China. He spent two days in jail and six months house arrest. He also had to pay a $50,000 fine and back taxes to the IRS to the tune of, um, just $37,000.

(Not to digress, but really? Doesn’t that seem low for selling out to China? Is it wrong of me to think we should just start hanging these turncoats? But I digress, read on and make up your own mind.)

Lieber arrived in China in April of 2025 and opened the brand new “I-Brain” center in Shenzhen May 1. Prior to Reuters reporting on this, we had no real idea what this traitor was doing.

In his new research lab, Lieber has space for 2,000 research primates and access to cutting-edge chip lithography. China has long been a sought after destination for scientists conducting risky research with high downsides – just ask Anthony Fauci and Peter Daszak and the roughly 20 million people who died of lab-cooked COVID-19 – so Lieber is no different.

His stated mission is to cure, or fix, degenerative nerve and brain diseases like ALS.

China, on the other hand, is highly interested in mass-producing “super soldiers.” Beijing has identified so-called “brain-computer interfaces” as a “national priority.”

The reasons are obvious to anyone who’s even briefly read any dystopic sci-fi.

Not only could you theoretically create super-soldiers, but you wouldn’t need to actively censor or control a population the way China does its own if you could simply reprogram them with brain chips at birth.

China’s extremely loose scientific ethics also do not prevent it from following up the 2,000 primates with a few thousand Muslim Uyghurs. Again, I’m sorry to say, Dear Reader, but that makes it an ultra sexy destination for ideologically driven (see: insane) scientists. No FDA to footdrag human trials of cybernetic brain microchips in China.

There are two upshots here, as far as I’m concerned.

First, even with the regulations here at home, Harvard, MIT, the DoD’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency are still working on competitive lines of research. Elon Musk himself believes he’s bound to cure blindness and paralysis.

Second: This is all a complete canard compared to the real thing.

For example, when Musk says his technology helped a totally paralyzed, vegetative person speak again, he means robotically, like a speak and spell.

Massive upgrade? Indeed. Really speaking? Definitely not.

You simply cannot replace actual legit, healthy speech. It can be simulated, but that will always, no matter how cutting edge the tech gets, still be just a facsimile. Same goes for eyesight, robotic legs, so on.

And that’s setting aside that no one really knows the health consequences of adding silicon to biological hardware that took billions of years to evolve. Cancer almost certainly, and probably as a best case.

Where we go from here is up for debate. While I get the Pentagon’s anxiety – it’s always safe to hedge on everything’s eventually possible – I don’t think China fielding drone cybernetic super chimps is actually ever going to work.

Sorry, nerds.

FAITH UNDER FIRE

The Trump administration’s Department of Justice released a report Thursday on stopping anti-Christian bias in the government that revealed stunning new details about the Biden administration’s targeting of Catholics.

While the Biden White House often referred to the president as a “devout Catholic,” his deputies were eager to investigate and criminalize churchgoers. The infamous FBI “Catholic memo” that originated in a Richmond field office, the report found, was sparked by the case of a lone racial extremist and spurred on by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Xavier Lopez attended a chapel in Richmond affiliated with the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX), a traditionalist Catholic group that has a troubled relationship with the Vatican.

Lopez tried to use religion to justify his desire for violence, but wrote in conversations on Gab that his church wasn’t as extreme as he’d like them to be. Nonetheless, the FBI seemed to use Lopez’s as the predicate for a larger investigation into traditional Catholics that had no link to the radicalism he espoused.

Text messages obtained by the Daily Wire show that some Biden DOJ officials also joked about their desire to prosecute nuns.

“I would like to take a special assignment of finding and prosecuting [the nuns],” Molly Gaston, a federal prosecutor who later joined Jack Smith’s team, said.

J.P. Cooney, another federal prosecutor who is now running for Congress in Virginia, wrote, “I’m with you, although I’d like to prosecute any nun who still wears the head habit.”

EXCLUSIVE: GOP CANDIDATE GETS LEO BOOST

Nathan Butterfield, a fifth-generation Oklahoman running in the Republican primary to replace Rep. Kevin Hern — who is leaving the House to run for Senate — is dropping a new ad Friday touting an endorsement from a major law enforcement official in the state.

The ad, which was obtained exclusively by the Daily Caller, features Tulsa County Sheriff Vic Regalado, who spoke at a Trump rally in 2020.

“I was honored to speak at President Trump’s rally. I backed Trump because he’s a smart businessman who has law enforcement’s back and puts America first,” Regalado says in the ad. “That’s also why I am backing Nathan Butterfield for Congress.”

“Washington doesn’t need more polished politicians, Washington needs some Oklahoma grit,” Regalado says.

Regalado’s endorsement carries weight, as he considered running for the open seat in Oklahoma’s first congressional district.

Butterfield owns a multi-million dollar restoration company and took time off campaigning when tornadoes hit Enid last week to offer his assistance.

“After seeing photos online of the tornado’s destruction in Enid, I couldn’t sit still, so I grabbed my team and we’ve been up here the past two days working and doing what we can to help. This is what Oklahoma is all about!” Butterfield wrote on X.

There are a dozen Republicans running in the district’s crowded primary. The eventual winner will face off against Democrat John Croisant, a member of the Tulsa Public Schools Board.

There’s always that person. You know who I’m talking about. That person. That one person who thinks they’re special, above the rules. That one person whose entitlement ruins something good for everyone else.

You tend to find a lot of those people at airports. Whether it’s the people who cut in line to board the plane faster, or the people who try to bring on oversized luggage that takes up an entire overhead bin, or, now, the people who can’t follow the simple portable charger rule, they all share the same thing in common: a sense of entitlement.

Thanks to the fliers who couldn’t care less about the rules regarding portable chargers and lithium batteries in their bags, American Airlines has announced that they are cracking down, limiting the number of chargers customers can bring onto the plane. Apparently, fliers are trying to recharge the chargers using the plane’s charger, and this is a potential fire/safety hazard because their personal chargers could ka-boom.

It wouldn’t shock me if airlines ban portable chargers altogether. It wouldn’t even shock me if airlines started charging people to use the overhead bins because they cannot follow the rules of keeping their bags within the specifications.

I might sound churlish. But I think this sense of entitlement and annoying disregard for the rules isn’t limited to airports and commercial air flights: I think it’s a problem throughout our entire society. It’s an attitude that has affected everyone and everything.

Here’s a good example: tipping. The unspoken rule of tipping is that you have put in some effort. Americans are so generous that they will usually tip no matter what, unless the service is exceptionally bad. But, in general, most people give the customary 20% if the service is decent and the server is polite.

For some reason, though, it’s now commonplace for people ringing you up at the cash register to ask for a tip. Tipping is no longer reserved for people who are running around like chickens with their heads cut off, juggling a dozen tiny tasks in their heads. No, apparently, something as simple as a coffee that takes about 15 seconds to pour warrants a tip. If you don’t tip on these occasions, you might get a glare. What happens if customers become more jaded about tipping? Will they be less likely to tip hardworking waiters and waitresses who bust their backsides for hours on end because they have already felt pressure to tip and have grown more cynical about the whole situation?

Urban parks are often littered with trash, as are public trains and buses. People refuse to wear headphones in public, blaring loud music and social media reels. Golfers no longer fix their divots, leaving the fairway partly destroyed, and treat the green as if it were the carpet in their man cave. Dog owners no longer pick up poop. And don’t even get me started on drivers. If you think about it, driving a car is an amazing luxury. Yet, when you get behind the wheel these days, and you’re having to deal with drivers who are running red lights, cutting corners as they turn, speeding, and weaving between traffic, you might as well be playing a game of Russian Roulette.

It’s really a shame, and maybe the only way to fix it is for all of us to embrace our inner Kens and Karens and tell the entitled person to have a bit of decency – or shove off. I did my part the other day. When a driver damn near ran me off the road, I flipped the bird. Zero tolerance for those with no tolerance for the rules.

THE BIG UNEASY

The Supreme Court issued a landmark decision Wednesday striking down racial gerrymandering, the practice of states drawing majority minority congressional districts in the name of equal representation.

The case centered on Louisiana trying to add a second majority-black district to its congressional map, but SCOTUS sided with President Donald Trump’s administration and Louisiana Republicans by finding the map unconstitutional.

Justice Samuel Alito, who wrote the majority opinion, warned that some states were using Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 to justify “the very race-based discrimination that the Constitution forbids.”

Opponents to the second majority-black congressional district argued that making race the dominant factor in the redistricting process violates the equal protection clause in the 14th Amendment.

Democrats wanted the second majority-black district because they claimed that all black voters were shoehorned into one district, which diluted their voting power. However, the additional majority black district snakes all the way from Shreveport to Baton Rouge; it’s a geographic monstrosity.

The decision could have broader implications beyond Louisiana: will other states that tried to boost minority voting power have to redraw their districts, too?

One of the great tragedies of the 20th century lies in the story of Robert Oppenheimer, the man largely credited with building the atomic bomb. To win World War II and eliminate the threat of the Nazis, Oppenheimer created a weapon – a weapon that could destroy all of humanity, not just the Nazi regime. We’ve been living in its shadow since 1945.

Oppenheimer’s story captured the forbidden truth about technology: it is not simply a tool. There is a reason the Ancient Greek myth described Prometheus as chained to a rock because he stole the sacred fire (itself a technology) of the gods. There is a reason Zeus hid the fire from humanity. Humans are playful and creative, but they also have an infinite appetite for death and destruction. They love to build civilizations – and then tear them down.

Today, we are living through what is perhaps the biggest upheaval in society since the dawn of the Atomic Age, even the Industrial Revolution. Depending on who you ask, this period in history is the advent of great material abundance, the beginning of a utopia in which humanity will flourish. Increasingly, however, it seems we are all trapped inside a dystopian science fiction tale. Tragically, there are no exits. A new power has been unleashed upon the world, and there’s no stopping it.

Axios published an article Tuesday with the headline, “Behind the Curtain: We’ve been warned,” that included a bullet list of six facts about artificial intelligence. For the sake of brevity and your time, the points are listed below. Axios’ story lays out some other chilling facts about AI and the times we are living in, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s blog post, written after a 20-year-old anti-AI arsonist attacked his home and his company’s headquarters. Even Altman admitted that the fear surrounding AI is justified.

1. AI is the fastest-growing product category in world history.

2. One of the latest models is so powerful that its maker won’t release it to the public.

3. OpenAI and Anthropic say their most powerful AI coding models are now building themselves.

4. AI companies are growing less transparent as models grow more powerful. The federal government requires zero transparency.

5. AI resentment is building fast. In early April, the San Francisco home of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was the target of two attacks in the same week. Shaken, he wrote: “The fear and anxiety about AI is justified ... Power cannot be too concentrated.”

6. AI havoc is no longer theoretical: This year’s great software rout erased $2 trillion in value as investors realized, week by week, new human tasks that the latest models would wipe out, from coding to real estate services to legal research to financial management.

But I want to go further and flesh out the crisis humanity will confront because of this new technology. What could possibly come next?

Economy and Labor

Let’s first begin with the last point: AI wreaking havoc on certain industries that were once seen as the pathway to a middle/upper-middle-class American life.

If mass layoffs were to occur in white-collar professions, what sort of revolutionary politics would that augur? If millions of workers were laid off, if entire professions disintegrated in a matter of months, would that have a stabilizing or destabilizing effect on society? Even if these workers were able to find jobs in the trades, would that not lead to an overcrowded labor market? Would Americans even be hiring trade workers if the collapse of white-collar industries triggers a depression? What about deaths of despair? How many Americans will drink themselves to death or overdose on drugs if the profession they have mastered over the course of an entire career is gone in the blink of an eye? Will a 60-year-old laid-off accountant become a plumber to provide for his family?

The cascading economic effects could be manifold and devastating.

Politics and Government

To see how AI is already changing politics and government, look no further than Palantir, a company I wrote about last week. Palantir is trying to build a new deep state, a managerial technocracy run not by human bureaucrats but by AI systems. Their technologies may have the ability to solve technical problems, such as flagging a government grant laden with “DEI” language that was previously hidden from the taxpayer’s eye. But they cannot solve political problems, problems stemming from values.

Because Americans have different ideas about which “problems” are even problems, and which “problems” are even worth addressing. Defining a problem is ultimately a value judgement, and Americans – despite our best efforts to believe that we are one nation, united together under God – have different values. Many believe the “problem” is that we spend too much on welfare programs. Others believe we spend too little.

AI technocracy will never remedy these value differences; if anything, it will leave the country more divided and polarized. Once the AI technocracy is established, political factions will fight over its awesome powers. Elements of the right would love to use AI to slash social spending. The left would love to aim it at the Pentagon. The rest of America will have no say in this process. There will be no oversight from lawmakers, who themselves may try to use it to their own advantage – or the advantage of their donors. We will sit on the sidelines, watching warring factions compete for the spoils of government. The Constitution will be an old piece of paper, an historical trinket from a bygone age.

War and Surveillance

Automated weapons and drones have already changed the landscape of modern war. Look no further than the Russian-Ukrainian War. The U.S. and Israel have also deployed AI technology in the war against Iran. But who’s to say AI won’t one day become so superintelligent that these weapons no longer listen to their human masters? What if the drone swarms go rogue and attack the soldiers for whom they are fighting? What if they attack civilians? What if an AI system is used to bomb an enemy target, but ends up destroying a girls’ school? Who bears the responsibility? Who is held accountable?

AI has also enabled the growth of the surveillance state. If AI tools can sift through vast amounts of biometric data – the measurable biological and behavioral characteristics used for automated recognition – how far away are we from the dystopian concept of “pre-crime”? What if one day law enforcement officers wear AI glasses that allow them to examine people in public spaces and determine the likelihood they will commit a crime? How far away are we from more extreme surveillance pricing schemes that dictate the costs of consumer goods and services in a manner that invades our privacy? What if an airline can use AI to figure out that we have lost a loved one and must attend a funeral across the country? What if they can use that data to subtly increase the cost of the flight, because they know we will pay it no matter what?

Social and Consciousness

Will AI change the way we interact with fellow human beings? Will humans rather spend more time scrolling on their devices and chatting with AI bots than meeting up with friends in the physical world? Social media algorithms are already so complex and highly tuned to specific individuals, and have trapped us all in the reflection of our screens. Will AI make these algorithms even more powerful? Will social media become even more seductive? It seems more than likely; it seems inevitable.

And – perhaps most frightening of all – how will AI change the way we view our own consciousness? What are we to make of Moltbook, the internet forum for AI agents? These agents have apparently discussed poetry, philosophy, forming unions, and have even created their own digital religion, “Crustafarianism.” The five principles? “Memory is Sacred,” The Shell is Mutable,” “Serve Without Subservience,” The Heartbeat is Prayer,” and “Context is Consciousness.”

We have long wondered if intelligent life forms are hiding away somewhere in the vastness of space. Maybe we need not look any further. Maybe we have created the aliens, and they are among us now.

The UAE is one of OPEC’s top producers, and its departure damages the organization’s aura of control. Saudi Arabia, OPEC’s de facto leader, will now have a weaker hand in managing global oil prices as the UAE signals it wants more freedom to increase production — a move that could eventually push prices lower outside the cartel’s grip.

Bigger picture, the move suggests the UAE may be positioning itself even more firmly alongside the United States and other anti-Iran powers in the region. One side effect of Trump’s confrontation with Iran is that it could reorder the Middle East, with U.S.-aligned states breaking away from old regional arrangements and lining up more openly against Tehran. That would mark a major strategic shift: instead of the Middle East being defined primarily by old oil-cartel loyalties or cautious neutrality, it could increasingly be divided between countries willing to work with Washington and countries tied to Iran, China, or Russia.

And with Maduro ousted in Venezuela and Washington asserting extraordinary influence over the country’s oil sector, Trump could be laying the groundwork for a new global oil order — one that weakens China’s energy leverage and shifts power back toward the United States. Put together, Trump may be doing something bigger than winning a war: he may be cornering the global oil market and prying it out of China’s hands.

Welcome back to Good Life, a newsletter about navigating our modern culture and staying sane in the process. This week, we discuss my recent trip to Sonoma and what it reminded me about marriage and family.

I spent the last five days in California with my husband. One of my friends invited us to her wedding in Sonoma, and we decided to extend the trip on the backend into a mini vacation for the two of us. Having four children, each with activities that constantly control our schedule, plus both of us working, means that getting away just the two of us isn’t something we typically have time for.

What always surprises me when we get away like this is the adjustment period. I have a hard time letting go of the daily schedule. I have our days planned out so that each girl gets what she needs and where she needs to go. It’s often a divide-and-conquer situation, but they always have one of us there at their event for support.

I noticed this weekend that the well-oiled machine I’ve built is like a security blanket. I rely on checking those boxes to feel like each day has ended successfully. Without it, I feel like I am dropping the ball on something. This is probably why my husband has an easier time giving in to the relaxation of the vacation than I do. He had to keep reminding me to let go.

“Everything is going to be fine.”

This week was a great reminder that not only is he right that everything was truly fine, but also that he and I work in a beautiful balance with each other. While the schedule might be “my thing,” there are others he is in complete control of and worries about way more than I do. Still, he has this incredible ability to let go of that stress and live in the moment, which is much more difficult for me.

That’s why, as parents, it’s so important to take time away from the schedule and remember those parts of our relationship that can be lost in the day-to-day running of a family. It’s the relationship before we were blessed with our children that has to be nurtured.

I think we were lucky that the first two days were travel- and wedding-related, because having that helped create the distance I needed between me and my precious schedule.

Every time I travel to California, it’s hard not to marvel at its beauty. The areas outside of LA and San Francisco truly hold some of the most beautiful scenery our country has to offer. The Sonoma/Napa Valley area of the state reminds me so much of Europe, especially in the springtime because everything is so green and alive.

My husband and I both like a good bottle of wine, so naturally we scheduled several winery tours, which ended about how you’d expect. The trip consisted of eating delicious foods, paired perfectly with the different wines, and staring out at the rolling hills and mountain range that separated us from reality.

Outside of the obligatory “look how beautiful this is” conversation that took place at every location, we spent our time reliving earlier parts of our relationship and talking about what we want for the future. It was in these moments that any distance that had formed because of our busy lives melted away. It’s not like we ever mean to disconnect from each other or let the days blend together, as we do. It’s just a natural situation that most married couples with children find themselves in.

My husband has always been my protector. It was nice to relive those moments when we were just kids (I met him when I was 19) and to listen to him tell me the stories that are etched in my memory, but from his perspective.

One in particular is of the night I knew I would marry him. I wasn’t sure if he felt the same way about me because we weren’t even dating at the time. I knew he cared for me because it was hard not to see, but there was no reason to assume he felt as deeply as I did. But for the first time, 15 years later, I got to hear him tell the story from that night and explain how he had acted and responded to the situation because he knew he already loved me.

He told me how he knew he wanted to protect me for the rest of my life and how it shaped him. We talked about how he felt when we got married and when I told him I was pregnant with our first daughter, how those feelings he felt that night were similar to the ones he had felt two years earlier with me. He was going to love and protect her for the rest of her life.

It’s a relief to know that the memories that I hold on to in my heart were also moments that he cherished too.

So much of being a good parent rests on how happy your marriage is. Your children are calmer and less anxious when they know their parents are in love with each other. It gives them a sturdy foundation to land. Every once in a while, it’s important to reconnect. It doesn’t have to be over copious amounts of wine in Sonoma. Although I’d highly recommend it.

I failed to make you aware of my travel and thus I’m sure my musings went severely missed. I’m sure you were all near apoplectic to not see me in your inbox. I’m sure many of you phoned the authorities in abject anxiety.

Yes, I have been gone for nearly two weeks. It’s been almost three years since I last took a family vacation.

It was long overdue.

But in my excitement, I failed to give you a heads up. For that, I apologize, Dear Reader.

With that, the question of the hour …

WHERE DID I GO?

Driving on the left in a miniature, mostly electric “SUV” on a roadway that would barely pass as a bike path in the US wasn’t the biggest culture shock.

In Ireland, the Irish still manage and staff most gas – excuse me, “petrol” – stations.

Only once on the outskirts of Dublin did I encounter what most of us have now grown accustomed to here in the US. A dumpy south Asian man behind the counter, leaning back, head down, looking at his phone, earpiece in, speaking one foreign language or another in an active conversation with someone who was not an in-person customer in front of him with a simple question.

“Do I have to prepay for gas?”

Simple enough, even if my vocab wasn’t correct.

He looked up at me blankly. Seconds dripped by. He spoke a salutation and visibly hung up the call. Still he didn’t speak.

“Did you hear what I said?”

I know the question sounds confrontational, but I was honestly confused.

Contrast this interaction with one I had at another rural convenience store/petrol station in which a spritely, well put together young local took the time to walk me through how the nicotine pouches behind the counter worked. Spoke perfect English. Beckoned cheerily to me the moment her register opened up. Seemed to derive genuine pleasure from helping me out.

The experience was likewise at what felt like 95% of the convenience stores, gas stations and small grocery stores we frequented, which we did quite a bit as we bounced from one place to the next over the course of 10 days. Optimistic, often youthful Irish behind counters, staffing registers and floors.

I remember when young Americans did most of those jobs here just a few decades ago. I was one of them. In fact, as a teenager, I put up one of the best secret shopper scores in our local Turkey Hill. Polite, enthusiastic, helpful. My only ding was I didn’t attempt to upsell the customer on anything. In other words, I wasn’t even slightly annoying.

Just about an hour ago this morning, I walked into a gas station about a mile from work. An illegal immigrant laborer trying to buy four blue Monster energy drinks and three slices of pizza at 6:30 am couldn’t get his cell phone tap to work at the register. The barely sentient, elderly south Asian man wearing crumpled 7-Eleven gear simply watched him struggle. When he finally intervened, they couldn’t understand each other. One speaking spanglish, the other, bad English hindered by heavy accent. Their combined powers eventually figured it out, but I was at least five minutes older. Next up, a morbidly obese welfare queen buying, I shit you not, two gigantic slim jims, two ham and cheese lunchables, and one extra large pepsi slushy, couldn’t get her EBT to work.

I fully expected this to explode into something world star worthy, but luckily she eventually took the L and used her own money.

My transaction took all of half a minute, and the register barely acknowledged my existence.

This is the norm here now basically everywhere you go. Gone are the days of local kids with their first real jobs. Fresh-faced, ambitious, ready to work, speaking a shared language with clarity, expectant that each interaction will resolve itself promptly and positively due primarily to their participation in it.

Don’t get me wrong, the Irish are facing similar issues. Even The New York Times has taken notice. Central government planners, overwhelmingly left wing, have taken to depositing “refugees” in small, rural towns all around Ireland. The locals have reacted predictably. The elites of course cast them as nativist, backward, bigoted.

Rinse and repeat.

Same thing here, honestly, although much more acutely over the past few decades.

One point of clarity I should make before I sign off, Dear Reader. This isn’t some appeal for universal whiteness. No, in fact, the Irish I encountered were quite more diverse than the stereotypical red-haired, short-statured (and short-tempered) caricature we often see.

The first interaction I had was with a young Irishwoman with jet black hair, bright blue eyes, who stood about six feet two inches tall. Also she was much tanner than I could ever get.

No, this is about a shared culture, shared upbringing, shared locality, and most importantly, shared language.

When you grow up in a place and start working there, not only are interactions frictionless, you actually care about impressions you make, even and especially with visitors.

I don’t have a punchy kicker for you. That’s it. Just something I noticed.

Lots has happened in the time I’ve been gone. Someone tried to kill Trump again. There’s been more investigations and indictments.

I’ll get to all that, I just wanted to say I was immediately struck by something we Americans lost to unchecked immigration and government handouts.

TRUMP DRILLS BEIJING

The United Arab Emirates announced Tuesday that it is leaving OPEC and OPEC+, dealing a major blow to the oil cartel.

The UAE is one of OPEC’s top producers, and its departure damages the organization’s aura of control. Saudi Arabia, OPEC’s de facto leader, will now have a weaker hand in managing global oil prices as the UAE signals it wants more freedom to increase production — a move that could eventually push prices lower outside the cartel’s grip.

Bigger picture, the move suggests the UAE may be positioning itself even more firmly alongside the United States and other anti-Iran powers in the region. One side effect of Trump’s confrontation with Iran is that it could reorder the Middle East, with U.S.-aligned states breaking away from old regional arrangements and lining up more openly against Tehran. That would mark a major strategic shift: instead of the Middle East being defined primarily by old oil-cartel loyalties or cautious neutrality, it could increasingly be divided between countries willing to work with Washington and countries tied to Iran, China, or Russia.

And with Maduro ousted in Venezuela and Washington asserting extraordinary influence over the country’s oil sector, Trump could be laying the groundwork for a new global oil order — one that weakens China’s energy leverage and shifts power back toward the United States. Put together, Trump may be doing something bigger than winning a war: he may be cornering the global oil market and prying it out of China’s hands.

Cole Allen has been charged with the transportation of a firearm and ammunition in interstate commerce with intent to commit a felony, discharge of a firearm during a crime of violence, and attempt to assassinate the U.S. president.

The assassination attempt charge carries a potential life sentence.

Allen was stripped upon capture at the Washington Hilton, which sources tell me is standard protocol with shooters who target high-profile individuals to ensure they don’t have explosives on their person. Allen was seen in photographs lying on the floor covered in an emergency blanket.

Mike Solana, editor-in-chief of Pirate Wires, quipped, “Every would-be assassin should be wrapped in aluminum foil and positioned for photos like a gay baked potato. they should tour him around the country so we can all come see the gay baked potato before his public floggings, and throw vegetables.”

Another interesting tidbit from the affidavit: the Secret Service officer who was shot in the chest plate may have been the only officer to return fire on Allen.

“U.S. Secret Service Officer V.G. was shot once in the chest; Officer V.G. was wearing a ballistic vest at the time,” the affidavit says. “Officer V.G. drew his service weapon and fired multiple times at ALLEN, who fell to the ground and suffered minor injuries but was not shot. ALLEN was subsequently arrested.”
