Apologies for missing yesterday too. Not off to a great comeback, eh? Something came up, couldn’t make it. Such is life. You have to take the Ls like men.

One of the things I try to do here at SOTD is highlight things most of the wider (political) media isn’t covering much or isn’t covering aggressively enough.

Sometimes that’s because it’s too hard to explain, too hard to cover, or both. Other times it’s just not sexy enough. Activist judge releases criminal illegal alien murderer back onto the streets is right over the plate, slow as heck, easy dinger.

Chinese super soldier AI-brain chimps not so much.

MEANWHILE, CHINESE SUPER CHIMPS

From the get, I personally think transhumanism is an overblown subject.

Even as the assumption is that technology will inexorably and rapidly and interminably advance, I just don’t think we’ll ever reach true Robocop levels.

That being said, the Pentagon is super anxious about a recent high-visibility defection to China. First, renowned Harvard brain researcher Richard Lieber was convicted in 2021 for lying to authorities about payments he’d received from China. He spent two days in jail and six months house arrest. He also had to pay a $50,000 fine and back taxes to the IRS to the tune of, um, just $37,000.

(Not to digress, but really? Doesn’t that seem low for selling out to China? Is it wrong of me to think we should just start hanging these turncoats? But I digress, read on and make up your own mind.)

Lieber arrived in China in April of 2025 and opened the brand new “I-Brain” center in Shenzhen May 1. Prior to Reuters reporting on this, we had no real idea what this traitor was doing.

In his new research lab, Lieber has space for 2,000 research primates and access to cutting-edge chip lithography. China has long been a sought after destination for scientists conducting risky research with high downsides – just ask Anthony Fauci and Peter Daszak and the roughly 20 million people who died of lab-cooked COVID-19 – so Lieber is no different.

His stated mission is to cure, or fix, degenerative nerve and brain diseases like ALS.

China, on the other hand, is highly interested in mass-producing “super soldiers.” Beijing has identified so-called “brain-computer interfaces” as a “national priority.”

The reasons are obvious to anyone who’s even briefly read any dystopic sci-fi.

Not only could you theoretically create super-soldiers, but you wouldn’t need to actively censor or control a population the way China does its own if you could simply reprogram them with brain chips at birth.

China’s extremely loose scientific ethics also do not prevent it from following up the 2,000 primates with a few thousand Muslim Uyghurs. Again, I’m sorry to say, Dear Reader, but that makes it an ultra sexy destination for ideologically driven (see: insane) scientists. No FDA to footdrag human trials of cybernetic brain microchips in China.

There are two upshots here, as far as I’m concerned.

First, even with the regulations here at home, Harvard, MIT, the DoD’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency are still working on competitive lines of research. Elon Musk himself believes he’s bound to cure blindness and paralysis.

Second: This is all a complete canard compared to the real thing.

For example, when Musk says his technology helped a totally paralyzed, vegetative person speak again, he means robotically, like a speak and spell.

Massive upgrade? Indeed. Really speaking? Definitely not.

You simply cannot replace actual legit, healthy speech. It can be simulated, but that will always, no matter how cutting edge the tech gets, still be just a facsimile. Same goes for eyesight, robotic legs, so on.

And that’s setting aside that no one really knows the health consequences of adding silicon to biological hardware that took billions of years to evolve. Cancer almost certainly, and probably as a best case.

Where we go from here is up for debate. While I get the Pentagon’s anxiety – it’s always safe to hedge on everything’s eventually possible – I don’t think China fielding drone cybernetic super chimps is actually ever going to work.

Greetings, Dear Reader,

I must issue profuse and enthusiastic apologies to start.

I failed to make you aware of my travel and thus I’m sure my musings went severely missed. I’m sure you were all near apoplectic to not see me in your inbox. I’m sure many of you phoned the authorities in abject anxiety.

Yes, I have been gone for nearly two weeks. It’s been almost three years since I last took a family vacation.

It was long overdue.

But in my excitement, I failed to give you a heads up. For that, I apologize, Dear Reader.

With that, the question of the hour …

WHERE DID I GO?

Driving on the left in a miniature, mostly electric “SUV” on a roadway that would barely pass as a bike path in the US wasn’t the biggest culture shock.

In Ireland, the Irish still manage and staff most gas – excuse me, “petrol” – stations.

Only once on the outskirts of Dublin did I encounter what most of us have now grown accustomed to here in the US. A dumpy south Asian man behind the counter, leaning back, head down, looking at his phone, earpiece in, speaking one foreign language or another in an active conversation with someone who was not an in-person customer in front of him with a simple question.

“Do I have to prepay for gas?”

Simple enough, even if my vocab wasn’t correct.

He looked up at me blankly. Seconds dripped by. He spoke a salutation and visibly hung up the call. Still he didn’t speak.

“Did you hear what I said?”

I know the question sounds confrontational, but I was honestly confused.

Contrast this interaction with one I had at another rural convenience store/petrol station in which a spritely, well put together young local took the time to walk me through how the nicotine pouches behind the counter worked. Spoke perfect English. Beckoned cheerily to me the moment her register opened up. Seemed to derive genuine pleasure from helping me out.

The experience was likewise at what felt like 95% of the convenience stores, gas stations and small grocery stores we frequented, which we did quite a bit as we bounced from one place to the next over the course of 10 days. Optimistic, often youthful Irish behind counters, staffing registers and floors.

I remember when young Americans did most of those jobs here just a few decades ago. I was one of them. In fact, as a teenager, I put up one of the best secret shopper scores in our local Turkey Hill. Polite, enthusiastic, helpful. My only ding was I didn’t attempt to upsell the customer on anything. In other words, I wasn’t even slightly annoying.

Just about an hour ago this morning, I walked into a gas station about a mile from work. An illegal immigrant laborer trying to buy four blue Monster energy drinks and three slices of pizza at 6:30 am couldn’t get his cell phone tap to work at the register. The barely sentient, elderly south Asian man wearing crumpled 7-Eleven gear simply watched him struggle. When he finally intervened, they couldn’t understand each other. One speaking spanglish, the other, bad English hindered by heavy accent. Their combined powers eventually figured it out, but I was at least five minutes older. Next up, a morbidly obese welfare queen buying, I shit you not, two gigantic slim jims, two ham and cheese lunchables, and one extra large pepsi slushy, couldn’t get her EBT to work.

I fully expected this to explode into something world star worthy, but luckily she eventually took the L and used her own money.

My transaction took all of half a minute, and the register barely acknowledged my existence.

This is the norm here now basically everywhere you go. Gone are the days of local kids with their first real jobs. Fresh-faced, ambitious, ready to work, speaking a shared language with clarity, expectant that each interaction will resolve itself promptly and positively due primarily to their participation in it.

Don’t get me wrong, the Irish are facing similar issues. Even The New York Times has taken notice. Central government planners, overwhelmingly left wing, have taken to depositing “refugees” in small, rural towns all around Ireland. The locals have reacted predictably. The elites of course cast them as nativist, backward, bigoted.

Rinse and repeat.

Same thing here, honestly, although much more acutely over the past few decades.

One point of clarity I should make before I sign off, Dear Reader. This isn’t some appeal for universal whiteness. No, in fact, the Irish I encountered were quite more diverse than the stereotypical red-haired, short-statured (and short-tempered) caricature we often see.

The first interaction I had was with a young Irishwoman with jet black hair, bright blue eyes, who stood about six feet two inches tall. Also she was much tanner than I could ever get.

No, this is about a shared culture, shared upbringing, shared locality, and most importantly, shared language.

When you grow up in a place and start working there, not only are interactions frictionless, you actually care about impressions you make, even and especially with visitors.

I don’t have a punchy kicker for you. That’s it. Just something I noticed.

Lots has happened in the time I’ve been gone. Someone tried to kill Trump again. There’s been more investigations and indictments.

I’ll get to all that, I just wanted to say I was immediately struck by something we Americans lost to unchecked immigration and government handouts.

Can I just say the quiet part out loud? The libs are right, at least in my case, way fewer people should vote. Let me rephrase that: Way fewer people should be allowed to vote.

Let’s get into it.

A FAIRER WORLD = 150 MILLION FEWER VOTERS

Not to start with a digression, but Republicans are plainly incapable of using power to restore the Republic. Democrats on the other hand wield it with reckless abandon.

By the numbers, the single most relevant factor deciding whether you are accepted to Columbia University is your race. That is still the case, despite Trump’s executive order, despite Trump owning the DOJ, and despite Republicans owning subpoena power in the House. Do you think the policy at Columbia, formerly a good university, happened by accident? It was a conscious policy choice instituted with near unanimous zeal and ruthless, systematic application.

Never mind the legality, we can do it, so just do it, goes the thinking.

I’ve beaten this drum to death, the most loyal of my Dear Readers certainly know by this point. But this particular point illustrates a larger issue when it comes to the direction of the country.

The lunatics are in charge of the asylum. Worse, the guys with access to the taser guns necessary to restore order aren’t the least bit afraid to use them, the problem is they can’t. Republicans are paralyzed by their own principles.

As we’ve heard so often when it comes to globalist libs citing “international law,” to these Republicans, I say: Are the principles in the room with you right now? Can you point them out for the jury?

The party that rode so-called “80/20 issues” like keeping male perverts out of women’s spaces have the fattest 80/20 known to man in front of them, the means to achieve it, and simply lack the ferocity of spirit to overcome entirely imaginary inculcation they received from the words and thoughts of long dead men.

The Save Act is wildly popular in practice. Proving one’s citizenship to register, then carrying ID to a polling place has 80% support among the general population. It has 65 percent support among self ID’d Democrat voters. It carries significant majorities of all racial categories.

It is the most pluralistically supported policy proposal in America right now.

Yet Republicans who can do it, won’t.

A lot of the problem, I believe, is the Overton window. The parameters of debate around universal suffrage are completely inverted.

Left to their own devices – and we know this because they’ve said it – Democrats will almost certainly attempt to institute a vote-by-text or -internet measure.

It’ll be American Idol all the way down to hell. Dial #969945 to 555-DEM-RULE for your choice in the general election! Remember, you can vote ten times per cell phone!

Republicans who attend elite dinner parties don’t want to be the ones who “disenfranchised” people. If violating their principles with regard to government exerting power is bad, worse is the ire of the liberal bourgeoisie. They hate being hated even as they will invariably be hated.

Allow me to start the shift. Allow me to add my voice to the window’s movement.

We should do more than just require ID to vote. The Save Act is the least we should do. It’s rookie numbers. We should do far more. Way fewer people should be allowed to vote.

The framers of the Constitution and America’s founding documents knew this well. For whatever reason, among the rules we venerate with almost knee-jerk reflexes, the one our founders repeatedly emphasized with regard to voting has magically evaporated.

Madison, Adams, Hamilton, all supported some version of John Locke’s second treatise of government. Namely that participants in the political system be independent and, importantly, have some tangible stake in the system.

Without a “stake in the society,” voters might wield power to drain the productivity, wealth and freedom out of the wider state.

Seem familiar? It’s almost certainly the case that universal suffrage has set into motion a race to see who can give out the most free stuff to their friends. On both sides of the aisle for that matter.

Infinity welfare with no work requirement? No problem. Free housing. Free health care. “Free” luxury hotels for illegal immigrants.

There is, of course, a simple and utterly ruthless fix for all this.

The next time the pendulum swings – and it will swing – Republicans ram through a new voting measure.

Americans must meet two of three criteria to vote:

1. Be a net contributor to tax revenue

2. Own property

3. Be married with children

That, Dear Reader, is what they call skin in the game.

Early leaders in states did something similar, for the most part, initially in America’s history. In modern times, midwits with credentials from hollowed out universities like Columbia retroactively looked at such restrictions and called them “racist,” since most freed blacks didn’t qualify.

Well, allow me to begin shifting another Overton Window: I call it aspirational. More gruffly: I also don’t care. I don’t care how many blacks qualify. I don’t care if liberals call it racist.

The percentage of qualifying whites, blacks, hispanics, women or people with an IQ lower than 85. Doesn’t matter to me. Explicitly: My goal is not racial empowerment.

Make skin in the game a requirement and the game will change entirely.

Grok estimates somewhere between 30-40% of people will qualify to vote. Common sense says at least a quarter of those people won’t even bother to do the work to prove it.

That brings the actual electorate down to about ~75 million people. The most successful, civically engaged, independent people. The ones with the most to lose, but also importantly, the ones with posterity acutely in mind when it comes to policymaking. In other words, they want success for future generations, white, black, stupid, the blind, and, yes, even women.

Would it favor the GOP? Sure, for a time. But smart Democrats would eventually wisen up. They were, in fact, the party of literal slavery at one time.

More importantly: Can anyone under the sun argue that politicians pandering to this crowd would produce more constructive policy?

Do we want pilots who can actually fly or do chromosomes matter more?

If we want pilots who can actually fly and policies that actually work for a prosperous nation, we need to nuke the voting rights of well more than half of America.

Otherwise, our descent continues.
