‘GAY BAKED POTATO’

The suspect who attempted to assassinate President Donald Trump at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner was charged Monday and faces life in prison.

Cole Allen has been charged with the transportation of a firearm and ammunition in interstate commerce with intent to commit a felony, discharge of a firearm during a crime of violence, and attempt to assassinate the U.S. president.

The assassination attempt charge carries a potential life sentence.

Allen was stripped upon capture at the Washington Hilton, which sources tell me is standard protocol with shooters who target high-profile individuals to ensure they don’t have explosives on their person. Allen was seen in photographs lying on the floor covered in an emergency blanket.

Mike Solana, editor-in-chief of Pirate Wires, quipped, “Every would-be assassin should be wrapped in aluminum foil and positioned for photos like a gay baked potato. they should tour him around the country so we can all come see the gay baked potato before his public floggings, and throw vegetables.”

Another interesting tidbit from the affidavit: the Secret Service officer who was shot in the chest plate may have been the only officer to return fire on Allen.

“U.S. Secret Service Officer V.G. was shot once in the chest; Officer V.G. was wearing a ballistic vest at the time,” the affidavit says. “Officer V.G. drew his service weapon and fired multiple times at ALLEN, who fell to the ground and suffered minor injuries but was not shot. ALLEN was subsequently arrested.”

What a crazy weekend. Let’s get into what happened at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

ALL DRESSED UP WITH NOWHERE TO GO DURING THE WHCD SHOOTING

When President Donald Trump attended his first White House Correspondents’ Dinner as president on Saturday night, media predictions were focused on how hard Trump would roast his foils in the press — and how the press would respond.

No one anticipated that DC’s so-called “Nerd Prom” would end with shots fired in the lobby of the hotel as a gunman rushed past security in search of Trump administration officials to kill.

It was just after 8:30 PM when dinner attendees heard loud pops and the Secret Service ushered the president and his cabinet off the stage. Early reports of what exactly happened were filtered through short video clips uploaded to X from journalists hiding under tables and eyewitness accounts shared over cellphones with spotty service.

Eventually, we learned the suspect shot a Secret Service agent in the chest plate before being taken into custody.

Cole Allen, a teacher from Torrance, California, ran through magnetometers at the security perimeter with a shotgun, pistol, and several knives. He had booked a room at the Washington Hilton the day prior to the event.

Allen reportedly sent a manifesto to his family shortly before attempting to take out Trump officials. In it, he called the president “a pedophile, rapist, and traitor,” adding, “I would still go through most everyone here to get to the targets if it were absolutely necessary (on the basis that most people *chose* to attend a speech by a pedophile, rapist, and traitor, and are thus complicit) but I really hope it doesn’t come to that.”

Allen also had a BlueSky account where he referred to Trump as a “sociopathic mob boss” and a “known traitor.”

The alleged gunman’s vendetta against the president led to the dinner ending in chaos: some journalists swiping bottles of wine off tables, others sprinting to the White House for a presser with Trump in the briefing room, and Erika Kirk leaving the venue sobbing — just about six months after her husband was assassinated on a live stream.

And about 30 minutes after the shots rang out, my husband and I were in an Uber headed downtown…

Today we’re covering what former USAID employees are doing one year later, the missing Republican congressman, and some fascinating polling about religious Republicans and Trump.

A YEAR WITHOUT USAID

It’s been just over one year since the Trump administration dismantled USAID, cutting a significant amount of funding and moving essential aid under the umbrella of the State Department.

Democrats warned at the time that millions of people were going to starve or that entire countries would collapse, but now The New York Times has a retrospective on another purported set of post-USAID victims: the agency’s former employees and former employees of the groups it funded.

The NYT article wasn’t received by the public, though, the way they probably hoped. The sympathetic profiles of former USAID employees and what they’re up to now — complete with original photographs of the subjects looking sad and downtrodden — have conservatives doubling down on their victory.

“This is a HUGE success story of this admin. The NGO economy needs to die,” Lomez, the head of Passage Publishing and a podcast cohost with Chris Rufo, said. “Really, genuinely, with utmost compassion hope these people learn to be productive contributors to the real economy.”

One of the USAID-funded employees profiled by the NYT is Sheryl Cowan, a former senior VP at a food security company who made $272,000 a year. Cowan’s LinkedIn profile says she lives in Falls Church, Virginia, (do you think she voted for redistricting?) and works to “deliver impactful solutions in agriculture and food security.”

Cowan says she has been unable to find full-time work — her best shot was getting an online interview last month to work at a spices store near her home.

The other stories are similar.

Amy Uccello worked for USAID for more than two decades and made $175,000 a year, while her husband ran a nonprofit that was almost entirely funded by USAID. They are currently surviving on government assistance programs and may lose their house.

It sucks to get fired — been there, done that. But conservatives have been raising some good points in response to the NYT sob stories.

“So, what you’re saying is that a person who is paid six-figures by a government agency is not worth more than a small fraction of that in the rest of the world? I’m stunned,” David P. Deavel, a professor at the University of St. Thomas, said.

The Media Research Center’s Brittany Hughes replied, “So we’re to believe she was good enough to be worth $272,000 a year and somehow couldn’t find another commensurate job elsewhere? For a whole year?

“Or maybe, like many taxpayer-funded positions, she just wasn’t worth $272,000 in the first place,” she added.

And there’s the rub. It can be hard to find good work. But if you were a supposedly high-level executive at a government agency and can’t find anything better than a job as a spice store clerk for over a year, maybe there’s something wrong with you.

Today we’re back with more on the Virginia redistricting vote and the weird trend of scientists disappearing and dying.

DEMOCRAT DUMMYMANDER

The post-election numbers are coming out of the Virginia redistricting effort and some Republican strategists are suggesting that Democrats might have shot themselves in the foot.

The proposed new map, which ostensibly gives Democrats a 10-1 advantage for congressional seats compared to the current 6-5 advantage, passed by a roughly three-point margin after all the votes were tallied.

However, the ten new blue-leaning seats are not guaranteed for Democrats. Patrick Ruffini, the pollster for Echelon Insights, noted that the “lobster district” — which I wrote about in yesterday’s newsletter — only voted in favor of the ballot initiative by 0.3 points. The newly drawn district voted seven points in favor of former Democrat Vice President Kamala Harris in 2024.

“Dummymander incoming?” Ruffini wondered.

Matt Whitlock, a Republican strategist and communicator, pointed out that Republicans got three of the newly drawn districts to vote against the gerrymandered map, even though they were expected to only win one. In addition to the deep red 9th district, Republicans also managed to win the 2nd and 6th districts.

“This is pretty amazing,” Whitlock wrote. “Democrats leaned so heavily on Fairfax to drive the entire referendum, but Republicans actually drove enough turnout to win 3 of the new districts, got ‘The Lobster’ within 0.3, and 2 others blue districts within 5.”

It could be that the proposed new map was just so obviously unfair that a bunch of moderates or center-left voters in those districts voted against it. Or GOP voters were motivated to turn out. It could also be a sign that the Democrat brand is incredibly damaged in Virginia … just five months after Governor Abigail Spanberger defeated her Republican opponent by 15 points.

All that being said, this gerrymander is going to face a long battle in the courts. Former Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli laid out potential areas for legal challenges and in a tweet Wednesday said that the Tazewell Circuit Court rendered the referendum unconstitutional. The election cannot be certified, which means the map can’t go into effect — although Cuccinelli said he expects an appeal. I wouldn’t be surprised if this ends up at the Virginia Supreme Court.

Today we’re breaking down the Virginia redistricting results, the indictment of the Southern Poverty Law Center, Trump’s ceasefire extension, and the ousting of Democratic Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick.

THE LOBSTER DISTRICT

Virginians voted Tuesday to approve a redistricting map introduced by Democrats that allows wealthy, Democratic residents in northern Virginia to outvote rural residents in the state.

The new gerrymandered map changes the balance of power from 6-5 to 10-1 in Democrats’ favor, even though the state went just under six points to Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 election. Democrats claim it is a “temporary measure” — existing through the 2030 Census — to combat President Donald Trump.

Former President Barack Obama was one of the chief spokespeople for the new map, alongside Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger, who ran in the 2025 election as a moderate Democrat.

The map itself is truly something to behold. The so-called “lobster district” — Virginia’s new 7th congressional district proposed by the map — starts up north with a sliver of blue Fairfax County and then splits into two arms just north of Charlottesville, where the University of Virginia is located. The proposed 8th district similarly starts in Fairfax and then snakes down to the area east of Richmond.

The ballot measure itself was also extraordinarily biased, calling the move to rip power from rural voters an attempt to “restore fairness.” The Democrat-majority state legislature approved the language on the ballot to read, “Should the Constitution of Virginia be amended to allow the General Assembly to temporarily adopt new congressional districts to restore fairness in the upcoming elections, while ensuring Virginia’s standard redistricting process resumes for all future redistricting after the 2030 census?”

Virginia Republicans launched several groups aimed at stopping the ballot initiative, including one run by former Attorney General Jason Miyares, and coordinated with the Republican National Committee in those efforts, according to exclusive Daily Caller reporting.

Though the GOP predicted rural voters might turn out in big numbers to stop the Democrat power grab on Election Day, the measure won by about two points. For comparison, Spanberger won her election against Republican Lt. Governor Winsome Sears by about 15 points.

Today we’re covering a fiery clash between GOP lawmakers, updates in the feud between the White House and the Vatican, the Daily Caller’s trip with President Donald Trump, Kash Patel suing The Atlantic, and Trump’s labor secretary departing the administration.

RED-ON-RED VIOLENCE

Republican Florida Rep. Cory Mills and Republican South Carolina Rep. Nancy Mace are pushing to remove each other from Congress, adding fresh struggles to the House Republican’s slim grip on the majority heading into the midterm elections.

Mills, who is accused of abusing women, has been a thorn in the GOP’s side for months. Mills was one of the deciding votes against the attempt to censure Democratic Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar after she said Charlie Kirk’s legacy should be “left in the dustbin of history” shortly after he was assassinated. The Daily Caller reported at the time that Mills had made a deal with Democrats to vote against the resolution because Democrats threatened to censure him as well.

Mace announced that she introduced a resolution to expel Mills on Monday evening.

Mills’s name came up again amid rumblings that former Democratic California Rep. Eric Swalwell could be removed from Congress. Republican Tennessee Rep. Andy Ogles floated a deal for Republicans to oust Swalwell alongside Democratic Florida Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, who is accused of campaign finance violations, Republican Texas Rep. Tony Gonzales, who allegedly had an affair with an aide who later self-immolated, and Mills.

The idea was Democrats would get rid of two of their members in exchange for two Republican members. Swalwell ended up resigning shortly before Gonzales.

There is expected to be action today against Mills and Cherfilus-McCormick, meanwhile, from the House Ethics Committee.

Despite his tenuous standing with his own party, Mills reportedly drafted an expulsion measure against Mace, according to NOTUS. The draft was said to mention Mace’s allegedly testy exchange with TSA agents during a recent encounter in the Charleston airport.

Mace responded to the Mills’ threat in a statement to the Caller:

“Cory Mills lied about his military service, has been accused of beating women, has a restraining order against him, and has allegedly been stuffing his own pockets with federal contracts while sitting in Congress. As a survivor, I will always stand up and right the wrongs of others. He is only coming after me because he knows he’s next.”

Mills did not respond to the Caller’s request for comment.

The #MeToo Boomerang

Democratic California Rep. Eric Swalwell is reaping what he sowed years after he demanded politicians “Believe Survivors” amid the Kavanaugh hearings.

Swalwell ended his bid for California governor and announced he is resigning from Congress after a former staffer accused him of engaging in sexual activity with her when she was too drunk to consent. He claims the allegations are false but didn’t want to be a distraction in Congress.

In 2018, though, Swalwell repeatedly demanded his Republican colleagues believe Christine Blasey Ford, who accused then Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her when they were in high school.

“What rang of truth from Dr. Ford? A lot of it,” Swalwell tweeted in October 2018. “But her description of #Kavanaugh struggling to take her clothes off because she had a one-piece bathing suit on — that is clearly burned in her memory. And a fact only a survivor would remember. #BelieveSurvivors”

“Support survivors. Believe survivors. We are with you,” he tweeted in November 2018.

Swalwell also said that subsequent Kavanaugh accusers deserved to have their stories heard.

Few Democrats publicly called on Swalwell to resign, but Rep. Andy Ogles suggested Monday that there may have been a deal in the works to trade two Republican expulsions for Swalwell and another Democrat.

“I think Swalwell is almost certain to happen,” Ogles told Benny Johnson before Swalwell resigned, adding that the House could also remove Democratic Florida Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, who is accused of breaking campaign finance laws, alongside Republican Florida Rep. Cory Mills, who is accused of assaulting a woman, and Republican Texas Rep. Tony Gonzales, who allegedly had an affair with a member of his staff before she died by self-immolation.

Mills allegedly previously refused to vote to censure Democratic Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar because he was worried Democrats would turn around and censure him. Yet again, Mills and Cherfilus-McCormick were spared. Gonzales announced he was resigning from Congress shortly after Swalwell.

HOLY WAR

President Donald Trump launched a broadside at Pope Leo on Sunday night on Truth Social, just days after the administration and the Vatican worked to repair their public-facing relationship.

In a lengthy post, Trump said Pope Leo is “WEAK on Crime, and terrible for Foreign Policy” and accused him of not caring when Churches were shut down during the pandemic.

Trump’s attack came amid Pope Leo’s public opposition to the war with Iran and calls for world peace.

Pope Leo responded to the president’s post, stating, “I will not enter into debate. The things that I say are certainly not meant as attacks on anyone. The message of the Gospel is very clear: ‘Blessed are the peacemakers.’”

He added, “I will not shy away from announcing the message of the Gospel and inviting all people to look for ways of building bridges of peace and reconciliation, and looking for ways to avoid war any time that’s possible.”

Trump added fuel to the fire by reposting what appeared to be an AI-generated image of himself as Jesus Christ healing the sick.

The president’s post about Pope Leo and depiction of himself as Jesus lead to condemnation from Christians.

Women’s sports activist Riley Gaines wrote on X, “I cannot understand why he’d post this … God shall not be mocked.”

Conservative Christian activist Sean Feucht said, “This should be deleted immediately. There’s no context where this is acceptable.”

The post also follows a story from The Free Press that claimed Trump officials tacitly threatened and bullied Pope Leo’s former ambassador to the U.S. in a February meeting. The Pentagon and the Vatican both released statements claiming that the details of the meeting were fabrications. The statements, which were released in relatively short succession, seemed to quell rumors that the Trump administration was feuding with the Vatican, however, Trump’s attack on Pope Leo has complicated that picture.

There are also questions surrounding the potential political ramifications of Trump’s comments. The president won the majority of Catholic voters in 2024 after losing them to former President Joe Biden in the 2020 election. Working class Catholics were an especially important part of Trump’s winning coalition.

Sheridan Gorman is becoming the new name that Democratic political leaders would like to quickly forget.

Gorman was an 18-year-old college student at Loyola University. She was gunned down last week while walking with friends by the lake.

And her life was allegedly taken by Jose Medina, an illegal alien from Venezuela.

It’s been just over two years since Laken Riley, a nursing student in Georgia, was savagely murdered by a different Venezuelan illegal alien.

The cases are strikingly similar: a promising young woman with her whole life ahead of her is dead, the suspect is an illegal immigrant, and Democrats will point the finger at everyone but themselves.

Trump says he’s entered peace talks with Iran, but it’s too soon to celebrate. Here’s the latest.

A FRAGILE MOMENT

President Donald Trump is signaling to Americans that he found an off-ramp in his war with Iran.

After days of threatening strikes on Iran’s energy infrastructure, Trump abruptly announced Monday that the U.S. had held “very good and productive conversations” with Tehran and would postpone any planned attacks.

Markets rallied in response: oil prices fell, stocks surged, and analysts assumed the worst was over.

The truth may be more complicated.

The biggest challenge facing Trump’s supposed breakthrough is that Iran doesn’t seem to agree that one happened. Iranian officials publicly rejected the idea that they’ve had talks with the White House, instead alleging that Trump backed down amid pressure from allies and the financial markets.

It’s a fair criticism — gas prices are getting dangerously close to the “psychological mark” where consumers start driving less or choosing not to fill up their tanks.

Meanwhile, Israel is continuing to launch strikes on Iran, including against the regime’s infrastructure in Tehran.

So if Trump is presenting this as the beginning of the end, why is nobody else acting like it?

Part of the answer is that Trump, Iran, and Israel all have very different goals right now.

YOU WON’T PROTECT YOURSELF AND YOU’LL LIKE IT

Virginia Democrats are once again showing voters exactly where their priorities are.

What’s happening in my state is unmistakable: political leaders are failing in their most basic duty to protect citizens, punishing the people who try to protect themselves, and then consolidating power to shield themselves from accountability.

In just the past few weeks, there have been several high-profile stories of illegal immigrant crime in Fairfax County.

The latest involves an adult illegal immigrant enrolled in a local high school who was accused of groping numerous female classmates.

Israel Flores Ortiz entered the country illegally during the Biden administration. Despite being nearly 19 years old, he was attending Fairfax High School as a junior. About a dozen girls came forward to accuse Ortiz of sexually assaulting them in the hallways, deliberately running his hands across their private parts.

There should have been a reckoning. Young, vulnerable girls were allegedly being abused by an adult predator who should’ve never been here in the first place. Instead, Virginians got the response they’ve sadly come to expect from public officials: excuses, shoulder shrugs, and more concern about the fallout than the safety of their citizens.

The school system waited two weeks to notify parents about what was happening. And when they did, they minimized Ortiz’s behavior and subjected the girls to further harassment.

“I think from the very beginning, Fairfax County has attempted to diminish what happened to these girls,” one mother said.

“They have attempted to sweep it under the rug,” another mother said, with a third adding that the letter was only sent out after parents demanded it.

According to parents who received the letter, the school system referred to Ortiz’s alleged behavior as “buttocks touching.” But these supposedly weren’t random ass slaps. The reality, the victims reported, was Ortiz grabbing and wiping his hand along the entire genital area. FCPS’ characterization led to further “harassment” of the girls, who were made fun of by their peers for being hysterical.

The attempted cover-up didn’t stop with FCPS. Fairfax Commonwealth Attorney Steve Descano’s office agreed to a bail request by Ortiz’s attorneys, which would have let him out of jail. Luckily, a judge did the right thing and rejected the bail anyway, citing public safety concerns.

Because Ortiz is an illegal immigrant, ICE issued a detainer so they could take him into custody and deport him. But ICE says the Fairfax County sheriff isn’t honoring it. This might sound familiar — the Fairfax County sheriff is Stacey Kincaid, the girl cop who reversed her office’s policy to cooperate with ICE shortly after her election.

Fairfax County’s elected officials repeatedly show us through their actions that they don’t care about our safety. Yet when we try to protect ourselves through legal gun ownership, we become their new targets.
