I took two Sociology classes in college. The left-wing bias wasn’t surprising. But a new WSJ article exposes just how deep the rot is.

THE SCIENCE OF GRIEVANCE

Sociology as a discipline is supposed to help us explain society. Now it just wants to complain about it.

The field has become less interested in asking why people behave the way they do than in assigning blame for the answer.

I had the misfortune of taking “Social Inequality” at Georgetown. I did it because friends told me it was easy. And it was in the ways that matter to a student trying to graduate.

According to the New York Times, the median family income of a student at Georgetown is $229,100, and 74% of students come from the top 20 percent of households in America.

I was part of the roughly 12% of Hoyas who were first-generation college students. The university doesn’t track what percent of students come from blue-collar backgrounds, but my experience suggested the number wasn’t very high.

As I sat in class just a few rows away from a governor’s daughter, I imagined I was something of an expert on the course subject matter.

Apparently not.

The Trump administration promised the largest deportation operation in American history. But there appears to be one major exception: illegal immigrants whose cheap labor is useful to powerful business interests.

That carveout helps explain why ICE agents keep conducting highly visible arrests in neighborhoods and on public roads — creating exactly the kind of tense confrontations the administration says it wants to avoid.

WHAT VANCE UNDERSTANDS

Vice President JD Vance sat with Joe Rogan for nearly three hours for a podcast episode released Wednesday and he did something that is exceedingly rare for politicians — he showed a bit of humility.

Vance admitted the Trump administration mishandled the Epstein files. He vented frustrations with an Israeli influence campaign attempting to derail the administration’s negotiations with Iran. And while he warned that socialism isn’t the answer to the economic problems facing young Americans, he conceded that the GOP’s response isn’t working.

Those may seem like three distinct topics. But Vance’s willingness to grapple honestly with each of them reflected an understanding that many politicians still lack.

A professor from Brown University may have created the perfect chart of our civilizational decline.

Brown economics professor Roberto Serrano gave his students a take-home exam this spring and was shocked by the unusually high scores. The class had scored an average of 96 percent on the test, compared to the normal 65 to 80 percent midterm average for the class.

Had his students suddenly mastered the material or was something else going on?

After reviewing the students’ answers, he wondered if they may have been using AI to cheat on the exam.

So he decided to test his theory.

VIRAL AND ABANDONED

A Reuters photo went viral this week showing a black woman sitting alone on the Metro among a crowd of Patriot Front members after their Fourth of July demonstration in Washington, DC.

It was catnip for the press. A black woman sitting quietly. A group of masked white nationalists surrounding her. Some called it the “defining image” of our time. Others said it was the modern-day representation of the Civil Rights era.

There’s no evidence that members of Patriot Front threatened her, approached her or even spoke to her.

And once she was identified, it seemed she was less a defiant hero than just a struggling woman in need of help — the kind of help the same media commentators would probably dismiss as cruel.

Nolan Xavier Wells, an 18-year-old Mississippi football player, went missing while visiting Horn Island with friends over the Fourth of July weekend.

Authorities launched a massive search and rescue effort with the sheriff’s department, the Coast Guard, marine resources officials and volunteers. Tragically, they recovered a body matching Wells’s description on Monday afternoon.

Wells’s mother asked for time to grieve her son. Instead, the internet chose a race war.

David Axelrod saw one unconscious man in Chicago. What he really saw was his party’s future.

THE MONSTER THEY MADE

Former Obama adviser David Axelrod walked past the Art Institute of Chicago during a heat emergency and found an elderly man, “probably homeless,” sprawled unconscious on the museum’s front steps.

“I asked a museum security guard about it and she said she had woken him 3 times and suggested he move into the shade and he refused each time,” Axelrod told his followers on X.

He continued, “I called 911 and the operator said, ‘Well, is he ASKING for help?’ When I said no, she said, ‘Well I’m not going to send anyone.’”

“So the man remained, passed out in the blazing noon sun,” Axelrod wrote, before wondering aloud whether “we’re not all complicit in assisting an unintended suicide.”

Welcome to the city Democrats built.

But Axelrod’s post was not really about the homelessness crisis, or emergency responses during a heat wave, or the failures of blue city governance. It was a big red flag waved by one of the Democratic Party’s most high-profile strategists about the disastrous road they’re headed down.
