A Texas jury took less than four hours Tuesday to convict Karmelo Anthony of murder for stabbing 17-year-old Austin Metcalf in the heart at a high school track meet.

The guilty verdict seemed obvious. Witnesses testified that Anthony refused to leave another team’s tent, repeatedly threatened Metcalf and then pulled a knife from his backpack.

Still, outside the courthouse, protesters tried to spin the case into evidence that racism is alive and well in America.

The defense in Karmelo Anthony’s murder trial rested Monday without putting Anthony on the stand, capping a day in court that did little to help the defense’s case that Anthony was acting in self defense when he allegedly fatally stabbed Frisco Memorial student-athlete Austin Metcalf at a track meet.

Video and audio are banned from the courtroom, so accounts of what’s going on inside are reliant on the handful of reporters approved to cover the trial.

Over the past few days of witness testimony, those reporters’ accounts paint a picture of a quite lopsided case.

TRUMP’S INTEL MAKEOVER

President Donald Trump tapped Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte to serve as acting Director of National Intelligence after Tulsi Gabbard stepped down in May to support her husband through his cancer treatment.

Pulte, the grandson of billionaire PulteGroup founder William J. Pulte, will reportedly keep running FHFA while taking over the intelligence post, raising questions about whether it’s wise to have someone in the role whose attention will be pulled elsewhere.

The appointment allows Trump to avoid a Senate confirmation fight, as the Federal Vacancies Reform Act allows Trump to temporarily install an already Senate-confirmed official in another Senate-confirmed position for up to 210 days.

The bigger problem seems to be, though, Pulte’s lack of experience. He has no known intelligence background. Further, at FHFA, he has made headlines for helping push the 50-year mortgage idea, reportedly irritating Trump allies by jumping the gun on the proposal. He was also reportedly connected to the Trump-Jesus image that triggered backlash from conservatives earlier this year.

He has also apparently managed to get on Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s bad side. Bessent reportedly clashed with Pulte at a private dinner in 2025, and when Sen. Thom Tillis asked Wednesday whether he had threatened to punch Pulte in the face, Bessent replied that he had actually said he was going to “kick his ass.”

Senate Republicans have made very clear that they don’t like Pulte, while Senate Democrats say they’re committed to not reauthorizing FISA while Pulte is in the job.

Trump will have to decide if swapping out Tulsi for a more loyal replacement — one who hasn’t made public comments against Middle East excursions — will be worth it.

RACE TO JUDGMENT

A South Carolina jury just handed down a not guilty verdict in a case that leftists hope will ignite another racial flashpoint in America.

Chikei Rick Chow, a 61-year-old convenience store owner, was acquitted in the 2023 shooting death of 14-year-old Cyrus Carmack-Belton, who is black. Prosecutors claimed Chow chased Carmack-Belton out of the store after he was falsely accused of shoplifting and shot him in the back. Chow’s defense team said he only shot Carmack-Belton after he pointed a firearm at Chow’s son.

That’s the key detail. Prosecutors admit the teen was armed. They also admitted that Carmack-Belton dropped his firearm during the chase and then picked it up again. But they insisted the teen never intended to fire his gun or threaten anyone. Clearly, the jury was not convinced.

Anti-Chow activists also pointed to the fact that Chow had called police numerous times to his store and had other confrontations with customers. They suggested it was proof Chow had bad intentions. More likely, it’s evidence that police haven’t been doing their jobs to protect the community, leaving vigilante justice the only option for an honest shopkeeper.

The verdict sparked outrage in the courtroom, with Carmack-Belton’s family crying out after Chow was acquitted. Attorney and Democratic South Carolina State Rep. Todd Rutherford framed the outcome in sweeping racial terms, saying it made people feel as if “our children don’t matter.” He also said he plans to help the family pursue a civil lawsuit.

Chow’s defense attorney, meanwhile, said his heart went out to the family while pointing out the obvious: bad things are going to happen when a 14-year-old is walking around Columbia with a loaded semiautomatic pistol.

It is a tragic case. But tragedy does not automatically equal murder, and the jury apparently decided the facts did not match the narrative racial activists wanted. Nonetheless, Chow has already faced severe punishment before being rendered not guilty: he spent three years locked up and his store was vandalized by protesters.

FUND FAREWELL

President Donald Trump’s $1.776 billion “Anti-Weaponization Fund” appears to be dead after the Department of Justice indicated they don’t have plans to appeal a federal judge’s ruling temporarily halting payments to victims of lawfare.

DOJ told the Daily Caller it “disagrees strongly” with the court decision halting the fund but will abide by the ruling. “This has become a distraction,” one administration official told Axios, while another said the president still “likes the fund,” suggesting the idea may not be permanently sidelined.

The administration could conceivably revive the fund after the expected June 12 final ruling on the fund’s legality, but all signs are currently pointing to it not continuing.

The fund was announced just two weeks ago after Trump settled his $10 billion lawsuit against the Treasury Department and IRS over the leak of his tax returns.

But it quickly ran into resistance from Democrats, a federal judge and even some Republicans, who raised concerns about using taxpayer dollars for payouts without clearer guardrails.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune said shortly after the DOJ’s statement Monday that he wasn’t aware that the fund had been dropped. Meanwhile, Trump met with Speaker Mike Johnson on Monday morning. NOTUS reported that their conversation helped convince the president to drop the bill.

The fund’s collapse is a major setback for one of Trump’s most aggressive efforts to answer Biden-era weaponization claims with direct financial relief for alleged victims.

LONE STAR LEFTY

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is headed to the general election after ousting longtime Republican Sen. John Cornyn in a bitter Senate primary runoff, setting up a high-stakes November fight against Democratic state Rep. James Talarico.

The primary was brutal, with Cornyn and his allies warning for months that Paxton’s personal and legal baggage could endanger a seat Republicans have held for decades. But the GOP establishment moved quickly to quash the feud. Cornyn conceded and pledged to support the Republican ticket, while top Texas Republicans, including Gov. Greg Abbott and Sen. Ted Cruz, rallied behind Paxton after his win. Paxton also struck a gracious note toward Cornyn, thanking him for his service after a bloody intraparty battle.

Democrats are betting Paxton’s baggage gives Talarico an opening. Republicans are betting Texas voters will take a closer look at the supposedly moderate Democrat’s history of Biblical revisionism and progressive opinions.

Daily Caller reporting has already documented Talarico’s record of bizarre theological and cultural positions. The Presbyterian seminary student has claimed “God is nonbinary” and argued that the Bible takes a “pro-choice” view on abortion. He has also tied Christianity to climate alarmism, saying the faith requires fighting greenhouse gases, and resurfaced posts show him bragging about pushing “#liberalpropaganda” as a public school teacher.

Then there is the meat problem. Talarico has promoted non-meat activism in Texas — a state where barbecue is practically a civic religion — while Democrats try to sell him as a heartland moderate.

Talarico is already trying to walk back to the center, dismissing his past statements as “intentionally provocative” and blaming Paxton’s team for circulating his “cringey” moments.

Paxton has liabilities, but Talarico’s own record gives Republicans a ready-made argument: he is not the moderate Democrats need Texans to believe he is.

A federal court is trying to pull a judicial mulligan after the Supreme Court gave Alabama another shot at using its GOP-backed congressional map.

The Supreme Court threw out a lower-court order barring Alabama from using the congressional map the state adopted in 2023 and sent the dispute back to the lower court for another look. But a three-judge federal panel again blocked Alabama from using that map for the 2026 midterms.

The panel claimed the Supreme Court’s recent Voting Rights Act ruling in Louisiana v. Callais did not change its earlier conclusion that Alabama’s map was intentionally discriminatory against black voters.

“Ultimately, we cannot see our way clear to requiring Alabamians to cast their votes in the 2026 elections under a districting plan tainted by intentional race-based discrimination,” the ruling said.

The practical result is that a lower federal court is attempting to keep alive the very kind of judicial redistricting fight SCOTUS appeared to rein in. Rather than treating the Supreme Court’s ruling as a course correction, the panel doubled down on its original conclusion.

Alabama could still appeal the ruling to the Supreme Court.

Today we’re covering the DNC’s horrendous 2024 autopsy, Republican resistance to Trump’s payout plans for victims of government lawfare, and sentencing for the woman who kicked off the Somali fraud scandal.

DEAD ON ARRIVAL

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) finally published the autopsy it commissioned after the 2024 election on Thursday.

The DNC initially planned to bury the report forever, with Chair Ken Martin arguing it did not meet the party’s standards for publication. But CNN apparently forced his hand after informing the committee it planned to publish portions of the report anyway.

Naturally, the initial secrecy sent Democrats into a speculative frenzy. Progressives wondered whether the report had been shelved because it defended the party establishment’s support for Israel over Gaza, or because it urged Democrats to abandon their support for transgender issues.

The actual explanation turned out to be much funnier: the DNC hid the report because it was embarrassing garbage.

The autopsy avoids critical examination of any of the actual issues that led to the party’s failure in the 2024 election. Instead, it whines about the White House not properly preparing Vice President Kamala Harris to become the nominee and the amount of time she had to build a campaign — even though her polling numbers got worse as Election Day neared closer.

The report notably does not mention:

• Inflation, Bidenflation, gas prices

• The party’s facture on Israel and Gaza

• The assassination attempts against Donald Trump

• Podcasts as an important campaign medium

• Catholics, Christians, evangelicals, or ‘religion’

• White men

• The Make America Healthy Again movement

It also is really light on:

• The party’s support of unpopular transgender issues like women’s sports, bathrooms, or gender transitions for prisoners. It briefly mentions the they/them ad against Kamala but fails to properly explain why it was so effective.

• Immigration and the border. The only mention of ‘border’ is in the context of whining that Harris was labeled the “border czar.”

• Climate mandates, which it merely describes as causing “anxiety” with voters

• There is a brief mention of “80-20” issues but not what those issues are

The report also bizarrely alleges that the media environment — including the mainstream, corporate media — is too right-wing for Democrats to be able to properly compete.

Martin released a statement following publication of the report:

“When I received the report late last year, it wasn’t ready for primetime. Not even close. And because no source material was provided, fixing it would have meant starting over, from the beginning – every conversation, every interview, every data set,” he wrote. “I am not proud of this product; it does not meet my standards, and it won’t meet your standards. I don’t endorse what’s in this report, or what’s left out of it. I could not in good faith put the DNC’s stamp of approval on it.”

That may be the most honest thing to ever come out of a DNC chair’s mouth.

We’ve got a big slate of primary results from last night and Trump’s last-minute endorsement of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.

FIGHT NIGHT

President Donald Trump proved Tuesday night that he still has the juice to shape Republican primaries, helping oust longtime incumbent Rep. Thomas Massie in Kentucky’s 4th District and carrying Rep. Andy Barr over the finish line in the Kentucky Senate primary.

However, the Trump-backed candidate in the Georgia gubernatorial race finished in second place and will advance to a runoff.

Massie, who has represented Kentucky’s 4th District since 2012, was the race everyone was watching last night. The libertarian-minded congressman has been a thorn in Trump’s side over the past year and a half, hitting him on everything from the Epstein files to the war in Iran and the national debt. Trump backed an outside challenger, former Navy SEAL Ed Gallrein, and the president’s allies — and AIPAC — dumped tons of money into the race.

Warning signs were on the horizon over the weekend as I got word from Kentucky sources that Massie’s ground game was severely lacking and the campaign was starting to get nervous.

Sure enough, Massie was ousted by about ten points. The outgoing congressman quipped during his concession speech that he “would have come out sooner but I had to call my opponent to concede and it took a while in Tel Aviv.”

Other Republican incumbents who have been pushed out by Trump over the past decade were more obvious. Louisiana Sen. Bill Cassidy, who finished third in his recent primary, previously voted to convict Trump in his second impeachment trial. Former Reps. Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger, meanwhile, voted to impeach him in the House.

Massie presented a unique challenge to Trump, as his criticism mostly came from the president’s right flank. Earlier this year, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who similarly accused Trump of not being ‘America First,’ announced she would resign from Congress after Trump threatened to back a primary challenger.

Will the president next go after those who supported Massie against his wishes, like Colorado Rep. Lauren Boebert?

Adding to Tuesday night’s chaos were the results in the Kentucky Senate primary, the Georgia gubernatorial primary, and a shock endorsement from Trump.

The GOP civil war over Kentucky’s 4th District is coming down to the wire, with President Donald Trump’s effort to oust Republican Rep. Thomas Massie turning into one of the party’s marquee primary fights.

Massie is facing former Navy SEAL Ed Gallrein, whom Trump endorsed after months of blasting Massie as disloyal over his support for releasing the Epstein files and his opposition to the war with Iran.

The race has increasingly become a proxy fight over Trump, foreign policy and Israel. Massie recently claimed “the Israeli lobby” was spending heavily to defeat him, and then he introduced legislation to force AIPAC to register as a foreign agent.

The Daily Caller has reported several wrinkles complicating the anti-Massie push. Gallrein raised $1.2 million in the fourth quarter after Trump backed him, but a Caller review later found that 85% of his max-out donors had a history of giving to Democrats. The Caller also reported Sunday that there are inconsistencies in Gallrein’s claims about his military service and that he went through a weird, messy divorce that involved basically paying his ex-wife “child support” for her two cats.

Team Trump sent in the big guns Monday, with Secretary of War Pete Hegseth appearing in his “personal capacity” at a pro-Gallrein rally. Sources on the ground in Kentucky tell us Tuesday night’s outcome is up in the air.

CIA FILE SWIPE

The CIA is facing scrutiny after two intelligence community officials confirmed to the Daily Caller that agency officials took JFK assassination and MKUltra documents that were being reviewed by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard’s team for declassification.

The revelation came after CIA whistleblower James Erdmann III testified Wednesday before the Senate Homeland Security Committee that the agency “took back 40 boxes of JFK and MKUltra files” and allegedly monitored the computer and phone use of Gabbard’s investigators, who were probing an alleged cover-up of intelligence related to the origins of COVID-19.

Curiously, just minutes after the hearing featuring Erdmann started, the CIA seemed eager to diminish the importance of what he might say.

“The witness testifying today is not appearing as a whistleblower in pursuit of the truth, but instead in response to the subpoena issued by Chairman Paul,” spokeswoman Liz Lyons said. “This proceeding amounts to nothing more than dishonest political theater masquerading as a congressional hearing. As the CIA has already assessed, COVID-19 most likely originated from a lab leak, and efforts to undermine that conclusion are disingenuous.”

Were they trying to turn people’s attention away from the allegations of file swiping?

Some online seized on ODNI spokesperson Olivia Coleman’s denial of a “raid” on Gabbard’s office to suggest the documents were never taken at all. But Coleman was denying the “raid” characterization — not refuting that the files were taken.

NewsNation’s Katie Pavlich reported that the documents were taken from the National Reconnaissance Office last year, during the government shutdown, and have not been returned to ODNI.

Former CIA officer John Kiriakou told Fox News that the CIA cannot overrule the DNI or the president on declassification, while Rep. Anna Paulina Luna threatened to subpoena the agency if the files were not returned to ODNI within 24 hours.

FRAUD AWAKENING

Vice President JD Vance and the White House Task Force to Eliminate Fraud came out swinging Wednesday, announcing a crackdown on Medicare, Medicaid and student loan fraud that the administration says has already stopped or deferred roughly $1.4 billion in federal spending.

The task force’s X thread described the effort as a long-overdue cleanup of federal programs, while Vance used a White House presser to zero in on health care fraud, including a $1.3 billion deferral in Medicaid reimbursements to California and a new Medicare moratorium targeting sketchy home health and hospice providers.

The Department of Education, according to an exclusive Daily Caller report, says a new fraud-screening tool has already flagged around 300,000 suspicious student loan applications and blocked $60 million in fraudulent aid.

Trump formally created the task force via executive order on March 16, with Vance as chairman and FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson as vice chair. It also pulls in the DOJ, HHS, Education, Treasury, DHS, OMB and other agencies to assist one another in finding fraud, clawing back wasted federal funds, and stopping money from going out to scammers in the first place.

The takeaway from the White House? The gravy train is finished.

President Donald Trump handed Democrats a ready-made midterm attack line Tuesday when he told Daily Caller White House Correspondent Reagan Reese that Americans’ finances are not factoring into his Iran negotiations.

“The only thing that matters when I’m talking about Iran, they cannot have a nuclear weapon. I don’t think about Americans’ financial situation. I don’t think about anybody. I think about one thing: we cannot let Iran have a nuclear weapon. That’s all,” Trump told Reese at the White House during a press gaggle Tuesday.

That answer may reflect a hardline national security posture, but it comes at a time when Republicans are struggling to sell Americans on their affordability message ahead of the midterms. The cost of the Iran War has ballooned to nearly $30 billion and gas prices are over $4.50 a gallon.

Sen. Cynthia Lummis, when asked about Trump’s comments, didn’t seem to believe the president meant them — which could end up being the GOP line. Either Republicans will dismiss the president’s comments as being a blip or they will follow Trump’s lead in identifying Iranian nukes as a bigger threat than the price at the pump.

MAP MELTDOWN

Virginia Democrats’ gerrymandering effort went from champagne-popping to damage control in a matter of days.

The Virginia Supreme Court on Friday struck down a Democrat-backed referendum that would have redrawn the state’s congressional map ahead of the 2026 midterms, ruling that the measure violated the state constitution’s required process for amendments. That means the map will remain at a 6-5 seat advantage for Democrats as opposed to the 10-1 advantage they sought with the referendum.

The ruling was a major blow to Democrats, who had poured tens of millions into the effort. The pro-redistricting group Virginians for Fair Elections reportedly raised more than $64 million, reportedly including nearly $40 million from a group aligned with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. It was also an embarrassing reversal for Virginia Senate President Pro Tempore Louise Lucas, who took a boastful victory lap on social media before the court struck down the redraw.

Virginia Attorney General Jay Jones and other officials filed a motion asking the court to delay its order, but even that filing drew attention for misspelling “Virginia” as “Virgnia” and “senator” as “sentator” on the first page.

Democrats are now reportedly discussing lowering the retirement age for Virginia Supreme Court justices from 75 to 54. That arbitrary age limit would force every current justice off the bench and allow Democrats to appoint replacements. Democratic Gov. Abigail Spanberger has not publicly endorsed the idea.

For now, the old map remains in play and Democrats’ $64 million gerrymandering push has become a political headache rather than a midterm advantage.

Los Angeles voters tuned in for a mayoral debate Wednesday night and got something Democrats probably weren’t expecting: Spencer Pratt looking like the only candidate willing to say the obvious out loud.

The former Hills star — who has never pretended his reality TV past didn’t happen — leaned into the thing that first made him famous: knowing how to command a camera. But this time, the stakes weren’t pre-scripted personal drama. Pratt used the stage to hammer Mayor Karen Bass and Councilwoman Nithya Raman over homelessness, crime, public disorder, illegal immigration and the failures surrounding the devastating Palisades Fire.

In one viral exchange, Pratt challenged Raman’s approach to homelessness, offering to go “below the freeway” with her to find the people she wants to “offer treatment” to — before bluntly warning, “She’s going to get stabbed in the neck.” The point? LA’s leaders sell sanitized policy “solutions” while residents live with the dangerous reality.

In one of the debate’s sharpest moments, Pratt confronted Bass over her administration’s wildfire response, accusing the city of leaving firefighters without the resources they needed as parts of LA burned.

He was just as direct when asked whether non-citizens should vote in U.S. elections. Pratt was the only person to give a clear “no,” while Bass and Raman gave waffling, mealy-mouthed answers.

Pratt’s viral campaign ads have turned his personal loss from the Palisades Fire into a broader indictment of LA’s political class. Even mainstream media outlets had to admit he had a breakout moment. Vanity Fair noted that Pratt needed to prove he could do more than “farm outrage online” — and, “for stretches” of the debate, did exactly that.

For Bass and Raman, the debate was supposed to expose Pratt as a celebrity sideshow.

Instead, Pratt turned the cameras back on them.

In an exclusive interview with the Daily Caller on Tuesday, Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves opened the door to redrawing multiple electoral maps after the Supreme Court’s decision in Louisiana v. Callais nuked race-based districting.

Reeves said Mississippi is juggling three redistricting fights: Supreme Court districts, congressional districts and state legislative districts.

“In Mississippi, it’s a little bit more complicated,” Reeves said, noting the state is already in a Section 2 Voting Rights Act case.

The most immediate issue is Mississippi’s state Supreme Court map. Reeves has called a special session to address those districts if a federal judge forces lawmakers to redraw them.

But he made clear he can expand that call to “other redistricting matters.”

Translation: congressional and legislative maps could also be on the table.

Mississippi currently has one majority-minority congressional district, represented by Democratic Rep. Bennie Thompson. Reeves said lawmakers are likely to revisit whether that map still passes muster after Callais.

“We know that Mississippi’s majority-minority district was drawn race-consciously,” Reeves said. “I anticipate that the Mississippi Legislature certainly will reevaluate our state’s congressional map at the earliest opportunity that they have.”

The timing is a bit messy. Unlike other Southern states, Mississippi already held its 2026 party primaries, so officials are weighing whether any new congressional map would apply in 2026 or 2028.

Reeves also accused the ACLU, NAACP and Southern Poverty Law Center of using racial gerrymandering to boost Democrats in the South.

“100%,” he said. “I absolutely believe that that has been their goal: to grow the power of the Democrat Party.”

Now Mississippi may become the next state to test just how far Callais goes.

Washington, D.C.’s police department is reportedly trying to fire multiple officers that they claim were involved in the manipulation of crime statistics to downplay the nation’s capital’s violent crime problem.

Assistant Chief LaShay Makal and Second District Commander Tatjana Savoy were placed on administrative leave due to a possible connection with crime statistics investigations led by the city, the Department of Justice, and Republicans in Congress, the Washington Post reported.

Former Third District commander Michael Pulliam, who was previously placed on administrative leave over the crime statistics issue, also faces termination, the outlet reported.

The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) was accused of misclassifying crime or changing crime classifications to reduce the city’s violent crime rates.The city’s allegedly artificially lowered crime rates were used to argue against President Donald Trump’s decision to send in the National Guard to help make the city safer.

The Daily Caller exclusively reported in October 2025 how D.C. police were manipulating data. Sources told the Caller that directives to reduce crime numbers were “pervasive from the top, all the way down.” One method was that responding officers were required to call supervisors on scene to be able to charge someone with a violent crime, the sources said. Officers were sometimes berated in front of their colleagues when violent crime numbers in their area were considered too high, they explained.
