I was actually so happy to have been off last week. I know, being in the news industry, I should want to be at my computer writing about the Lindsay Clancy murder trial. It’s not that there weren’t moments when I thought about going into my office and jotting down my feelings on the matter. Instead, I took the time to prepare my children for the first week of school.
I did my best to avoid watching the reaction videos and listening to the testimony. And now that I am back and fully immersed in the case, it’s become increasingly difficult to watch women defend Lindsay for brutally murdering her three children. It’s all so evil and dystopian.
I think a small part of the mass psychosis that has formed during this trial can be explained by knowing that it’s hard to relate to a mother killing her kids. There is a part of you that sits back thinking that this just can’t be true. There is no way she could have done this to those poor children.
But the reality is that she did. She admitted to the heinous act. Her plea has never been “not guilty” because she didn’t do it. She pleaded “not guilty due to a mental disease or defect.” She claims to have had postpartum depression and psychosis. She said that when her husband left the house that day, she had evil intrusive thoughts telling her that if she didn’t kill those little children, then she would never have another opportunity.
Psychiatrist Dr. Avram Mack, who testified during the trial, stated that she retained substantial capacity to appreciate wrongfulness and control her behavior. She didn’t have psychosis before or after the murders. He testified that she knew what she was doing when she took the exercise band, wrapped it around her toddlers’ necks, and squeezed the life out of them. Each murder took over 3 minutes to complete. Each child died with extreme fear and confusion at the hands of their mother. And yet, women are filling the courtroom, lining up on the road, and taking to social media to defend Lindsay and try to shift blame to her husband, Patrick Clancy.
Every night since this trial has captivated the world, I’ve found myself being overtly loving to the girls. It’s as if I need to love them harder just to make up for the pain Lindsay caused her own children. If this isn’t the reaction that your wife or girlfriend feels, run, don’t walk.
This situation has made for the perfect case for men to take notes about the signs of whether a woman would make a good wife and mother. The internet has given the perfect example of who not to choose. If at any point a woman you are with supported Lindsay, leave her immediately. Even if she is just posting it to gain followers on social media, that is a big enough red flag to show she doesn’t have the mental strength to distinguish right from wrong. She’s going to blame you for every misstep while simultaneously making excuses for her own mistakes. Run, don’t walk.
Mental health and the real struggles that some women face after giving birth are real. I’ve experienced postpartum depression. It leaves you feeling isolated and lonely. It’s hard to climb out of the hole your hormones dig for you. Experiencing this in my life leaves me with deep sympathy for those who suffer with it. Still, not one time, even on my hardest day, did I think killing my child would make it all better. A vacation? Maybe. A break from the house? Definitely. But murder never came into my mind as a way to release the pressure.
If her mental health was so bad that it could explain away her strangling her children, why didn’t she ask for help when her husband called while he was at CVS? Her defenders will say that he abandoned her. But it was Lindsay who sent him to pick up food she ordered. It was Lindsay who sent him to CVS for medication. This wasn’t a woman drowning in depression with no capacity to understand what she was doing. She committed deliberate acts to get him as far away from the house for as long as possible so she could murder her children without him stopping her.

The part that I still can’t wrap my brain around is the clear lack of guilt that Lindsay has shown. I was talking to my husband about the case last week after I saw a video of her smirking during the trial. If this had been me and I had a psychotic break that led me to murder the girls, you wouldn’t catch me at trial. I would have never made it to the arrest stage. Grief would have driven me over the edge. And if by chance I lived, a trial would not be necessary. I’d plead guilty and demand the courts give me the death penalty.
Lindsay is showing no signs of remorse. She claims to have had a temporary mental break, but how does this explain her calm demeanor in court? When she supposedly came back to reality, shouldn’t there have been a moment that broke her again, this time forever? She murdered her innocent children. How is she able to even sit there and listen to the testimony of experts detailing the horrific way her children died and not beg to end it all?
I actually love women a lot. I know that’s probably odd coming from a conservative commentator. I know the right loves to demonize how radical my sex has become, and for good reason; most of these women are nuts. But I just can’t help it. I am one, and I am raising four. I want them to be loved and have as many opportunities for a fulfilled life as anyone else.
But just because I love women doesn’t mean that I am going to hop on the delusion train. The women supporting Lindsay are just as much monsters as her.
