Welcome back to Mr. Right, a newsletter about navigating modern manhood for normal guys in a not-normal world. This week, we discuss Erika Kirk’s role in carrying on Charlie’s legacy and the patriotism on display for the 2025 Ryder Cup.
Charlie’s Kirk Best Life Decision: Marrying Erika
In the wake of Charlie Kirk’s tragic passing, Erika Kirk’s role in honoring her husband’s legacy has come to the forefront.
As the widow of the Turning Point USA founder, Erika not only finds herself in the position of preserving his memory but also advancing the ideas and values he championed. (A Great Man’s Legacy Can Be Destroyed By One Bad Decision)
Erika’s speech at Charlie’s memorial Sunday was phenomenal. She showed strength and grace, and forgave her husband’s assassin, a stance Charlie himself would have taken. Her composure also showed just how important it is to find a spouse who aligns with your values and is willing to honor your legacy long after you’re gone.
Some of her words are worth reading in full:
“On the cross, our Savior said, ‘Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.’ That man, that young man … I forgive him … I forgive him because it is what Christ did. It is what Charlie would do. The answer to hate is not hate … The answer we know from the gospel is love, and always all. Love for our enemies and love for those who persecute us.”
As I have discussed before with legendary NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt, a supportive spouse acts as a steward of their partner’s vision, ensuring that their work and ideals transcend beyond their lifetime. The right partner not only shares but also amplifies their vision.
Unfortunately for Earnhardt, his widow did a terrible job preserving his legacy as an avid outdoorsman by planning to sell his beautiful land in North Carolina. Fortunately for Charlie, Erika has so far crushed it.
In her speech, she expressed a desire to rise above the tragedy with love — a testament to the depth of her understanding and alignment with Charlie’s principles. She loves her husband, of course, but has a deep understanding of who he was as a person, his work, and what he fought for.
The story of the Kirks is a lesson in legacy-building: a spouse who understands and respects the weight of their partner’s dreams can push those dreams to greater heights.
But it’s also a reminder for men to choose wisely when it comes to marriage. It’s a decision that resonates far beyond the personal and private. When you are gone, they will be the ones who carry on your legacy.
Now We’re Cooking: USA! USA! USA!
I don’t care if it’s race-walking, ping pong, or professional mud bogging: when it comes to American sports, I am a hardcore jingoist.
This weekend is time for sports jingoism. The United States and Europe will duke it out in one of golf’s most exciting tournaments: the Ryder Cup.
It’s only Thursday, but we are already off to a fantastic and very patriotic start.
First off, our American legend and world number one golfer, Scottie Scheffler, praised President Donald Trump on Tuesday and revealed that he often calls after big wins.
Trump will also attend the tournament at some point, which has Scottie fired up.
“To have our president here and for us to represent the United States of America, albeit being in a golf tournament, is extremely important for us, and we’re excited to be on home soil with the home crowd, and we’re ready to get this tournament started,” he said.
Then, on Wednesday, fans booed the New York’s Democratic governor, Kathy Hochul, during the opening ceremony at Bethpage Black in Long Island.
This is American golf at its finest. Trump rooting for the boys. Big boos for Kathy. And, of course, some epic U-S-A chants peppered throughout the weekend.
Now we’re cooking.
