I’m going to break from my cohort today.
Not a ton of time, so let’s keep it short, loud and fast.
MARK KELLY WOULD LOVE TO GO JAIL
The story right now is that Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly went on CBS and “blabbed” classified information on the state of American munitions.
Here’s what he said:
MARGARET BRENNAN: Senator, CBS has reported that the cost of the Iran war is at least $50 billion. I know you have been pressing the Pentagon on defining just how many of our munitions have been used up in the course of this conflict to date. You said you’ve been worried about how the U.S. would hold up in a conflict with China because of all of this. Have you gotten an answer on how depleted U.S. munitions are?
SEN. MARK KELLY: Yes, Margaret, we have, we’ve been tracking it a number of times. We’ve been briefed by the Pentagon on specific munitions. Actually, it’s been pretty detailed on Tomahawks, ATACMS, SM-3, THAAD rounds, Patriot rounds, so those interceptor rounds to defend ourselves. And the numbers are, I think it’s fair to say it’s shocking how deep we have gone into these magazines, because this president got our country into this without a strategic goal, without a plan, without a timeline, and because of that, we’ve expended a lot of munitions, and that means the American people are less safe. Whether it’s a conflict in the western Pacific with China or somewhere else in the world, the munitions are depleted. You may have seen me ask the secretary of defense this question about how long it’s going to take to replenish. We’re talking about years.
Kelly followed up by saying this depletion is cause for serious concern. He characterized in terms of how long of a conflict the US could possibly sustain, given the number. Surprise: Not long was the answer.
Kelly’s appearance got the right wing completely spun. Pete Hegseth is super mad. So are premiere conservative commentators like Scott Jennings.
Criticism ranges from Kelly should resign to Kelly should be investigated.
The charge is he “revealed” classified information and, what’s more, assessments of U.S. capability.
There are a couple major issues with this line of attack, first being that nothing Kelly said was a secret. Major media outlets have been reporting about the depleted stockpile virtually from the moment shooting started in Iran. Indeed, it’s been an ongoing debate about US supply and manufacturing chains, starting first on the political right when the Ukraine war broke out.
Also, it’s obvious. We can watch the war on YouTube and Twitter. We get updates every day on US strikes. We know they’re spending rounds at a cyclic rate.
The second major issue is just as obvious as the war: Kelly would love to go to jail.
His strategy isn’t galaxy-level Sun Tzu mystification. It’s been painfully obvious since the (truly wild) video Kelly appeared in encouraging military members not to “follow unlawful orders” that Kelly’s strategy is to encourage baseless criminal investigations, even indictments.
Just like their sudden podcast blitz, Democrats are merely chimping what worked for Trump!
So, yes, it would be a godsend for Kelly if he could obtain a Trump World-induced booking photo. He would LOVE that.
Third, and perhaps most concerning: Kelly was originally Obama’s pick for Kamala’s spot in ‘24.
There are a raft of liberals planning to run in ‘28, and Kelly is the one I’m most concerned about. Buttigieg is pathetic, so is Kamala. The governors in Maryland, Michigan, New York and California have way too much baggage. Who else? AOC? LOL
What Kelly has that those others don’t is a pretty clean record, the support of Obama world, and most importantly: He isn’t an incompetent boob.
He’ll actually get shit done. Bad shit.
Kelly is far and away one of the biggest threats to the plans of National Conservatism and it’s not even really close.
We’d do well to remember that the next time he tries one of these stunts. He’s flirting with jail. He wants to go. He knows, from Trump, that it’s likely to result in a vault straight to the nomination.
We should ignore his silly antics.
