HOW TO CREATE DUMB REVOLUTIONARIES
New York State is getting rid of the Regents exams for its public school systems in the 27/28 school year. For those not following along, the Regents exams are intended to show baseline competence in core subjects. In competitive academics, they’re a non-entity, easily passed, and go entirely unreferenced when preference is for SATs, ACTs and so on.
But wait, it gets stupider.
Rather than pass the Regents exams to graduate:
The state is transitioning to a graduation system centered on six high-level attributes, including critical thinking and effective communication, with students demonstrating their learning through a wider range of experiences and assessments.
I know these attributes are “high-level” because the news copy says they are, mmmkay?
The people in charge of public education in New York instead want students to “form a portrait” of what public school graduates “should look like.”
Creeped out yet?
The four other “attributes” students need to demonstrate are global citizenship, creative innovation, academic preparation and that they are “reflective and future focused.”
Hey, Mrs. Sheinbottom, can I do my global citizenship project on how borders aren’t real?

If you’re thinking most of these are euphemisms, that’s because they are. This is exactly the kind of nebulous non-academic gobbledygook that gives bureaucrats an opportunity to pollute the youth with overt propaganda instead of actual “academic preparation.” It’s useless unless your goal is to make a bunch of money tearing down institutions so you can decide on their replacements.
(By the way, let’s take a moment to bask in the audacity of listing “academic preparation” among six attributes as you do away with baseline academic exams on things like literacy, reading comprehension and math.)
The timeline is even more rich. The curriculum for these attributes needs to be designed and in place by no later than next fall. I wonder which Democrat-friendly education NGOs in New York state will be getting the contracts to design that curriculum?
What happens next is tens of thousands of illiterate, civically impaired students with “high-level” bullshit grades will apply for loans to go to elite universities, where they will be matriculated so administrators can get taxpayer money, and where they will invariably struggle to learn anything remotely challenging or productive.
What they will learn, however, both by experience and by the instruction of their professors is that it’s the system’s fault. And they won’t be entirely wrong! It was in fact the system that delivered them unprepared to college, and it was the system that indebted them. It was the system that crippled them and lied to them the whole way.
That same system will then turn them loose on … us.
The tidal wave of learned and experienced grievance will direct its revolutionary ire on the productive members of society.
