The left’s anathema for holding people accountable results in others bearing the burden

Greetings, Dear Reader,

I was reading the Bible last night. St. Paul’s letter to the Galatians, chapter six, verses 1-5 and verses 7-8.

My friends, if anyone is detected in a transgression, you who have received the Spirit should restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness. Take care that you yourselves are not tempted. ²Bear one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. ³For if those who are nothing think they are something, they deceive themselves. ⁴All must test their own work; then that work, rather than their neighbor’s work, will become a cause for pride. ⁵For all must carry their own loads.

⁷Do not be deceived; God is not mocked, for you reap whatever you sow. ⁸If you sow to your own flesh, you will reap corruption from the flesh; but if you sow to the Spirit, you will reap eternal life from the Spirit.

WELL WELL WELL, IF IT ISN’T CONSEQUENCES

One of the most fundamental planks of Western civilization is that individual liberty is tied directly to responsibility. The man who takes on responsibility and delivers on that responsibility is afforded more liberty than the man who does not.

It seems counterintuitive, but it’s true. If you take care of your family, take care in your work, and take care of your community, then that community will afford you more options or opportunities than you had starting off.

Do deadbeat, drug addict criminals get small business loans? Probably not. Does the guy with six local car dealerships who sponsors the little league team and attends church routinely? Probably so.

While Paul encourages charity and community – “if anyone is detected in a transgression, you … should restore such a one in the spirit of gentleness” and “bear one another’s burdens” – he’s clear on ultimate responsibility – “all must carry their own loads,” and most famously, “you reap whatever you sow.”

All of this, however, assumes the community itself is healthy.

I don’t think it’s the least bit exaggerated to say one political party in this country does just about everything it can to encourage avoidance of responsibility.

It’s generally the party of “root causes.” Oddly enough, treating these so-called “causes” almost never works. In June 2021, Kamala Harris famously traveled down to South America to treat the “root causes” of illegal immigration. A record 10 million illegal crossings occurred in the three years after that.

Nice work, K-Rock!

And that’s the Democrat establishment. Let’s check on their left flank.

DSA National Political Committee member Frances Gill sat down with Conan Nolan of NBC4 Los Angeles.

Frances Gill: What we really want to see is a horizon where folks are not reliant on armed enforcement to meet our public safety needs.

Nolan: Right, but it says “defund police” on your website — that’s your goal — and also to get rid of prisons and jails, correct?

Gill: Correct. / Yes.

Nolan: So if my daughter is assaulted and raped, is there any agency that would seek to find her assailant and bring him to justice?

Gill: Of course, yeah of course—

Nolan: What would it be if not police and where would he be if not a jail?

Gill: So I guess I really want to avoid getting caught into these hypotheticals and talk more about the reality that we’re actually facing right now, which is that we’re spending absolutely outrageous amounts of money on police and policing. And we’re not spending money on things that actually make people safe and feel safe, which is things like actually well-lit streets.

Things like mental health care and substance use treatment … so things that drive people to commit crimes and to make our society less safe. We’re not doing anything about the root causes and instead we’re funneling the money into the police.

This is not just a position of DSA members and campus radicals with septum piercings. It’s the whole enchilada, from militant socialists to old Joe Biden himself.

The prestigious New England Journal of Medicine just published a piece arguing in all seriousness that Jason Arday (RIP) of Cambridge did nothing wrong except be black in academia. In fact, everyone is cheating in academia, the piece argues.

Instead of perhaps holding Arday accountable first, then the rapidly hollowing rigors of academia, who does the author blame? Racism, of course. You probably don’t have to guess, but that’s a “root cause” of Arday’s outcome in this case.

From the elite to the indebted barista with advanced degrees, from the establishment to the truly radical, virtually nobody on the political left wants a system where individual men are held accountable for their actions.

Right now, I’m supposed to be upset about Yasmany Moreno de Armas, a Cuban national who was deported to the Central African Republic. He crossed into the US illegally by raft in 2016. Nine years later, in 2025, he was detained and deportation proceedings kicked off.

Was it my personal responsibility to make sure de Armas spent his (illegal) nine years in the US wisely? That he coached himself up enough on Cuban relations with the US to know he could not be deported back to Cuba? That he seriously considered taking the ~$3,000 pay out and self deporting?

Now he’s in the Congo and CBS is bellyaching about his outcome. Nobody on the left in this debate can muster the courage to discuss how de Armas’s choices led to his being in the Congo.

Trump’s DHS just picked up an illegal in one of the wealthiest counties in America for selling fentanyl outside a public school. He was caught in 2016 under Obama and released into the country. In 2024, the Biden DHS encountered him and let him go.

“The Loudon County Sheriff says investigators ID’d him as a dealer connected to overdoses of students at Park View High School in May 2026,” Fox’s Bill Melugin reported Monday.

Students OD’d. What were the “root causes” of those students ODing? Was it not enough guidance counselors in the school? Not enough resources in the richest county in Virginia?

The root cause in this case was Democrat policies of leniency.
