State of Wednesday: BETTER TO BE INCOMPETENT, THAN OBVIOUSLY CRAZY
Incompetence versus gulags, hmmmm which to choose!
Greetings, Dear Reader,
First things first: I will not be in your inbox tomorrow. I’m moving and it’s going to take up my entire day. We’re excited. Big new house, new things ahead, closer to church, closer to school, closer to work. It’s all good.
Next: Even though I won’t be around Thursday, I encourage you to tune in Friday. I’m going to finally write about my favorite new conspiracy theory. I really love this one, and you will too.
Finally: Things aren’t going great for the GOP or for Trump in the eyes of the people. Luckily, predictably, they’re worse for Dems.
BETTER TO BE INCOMPETENT, THAN OBVIOUSLY CRAZY
Things aren’t going well for Trump among the electorate. He’s slipping in nearly every metric. He just hit his highest national disapproval rating yet.
Functionally speaking, the midterms look bad. I’m not sure why Trump doesn’t appear more urgent other than his striking penchant for inexhaustible confidence. Losing the House would be sad but predictable, while losing the Senate would be catastrophic.
The House of Trump is teetering. The brothers have been doing all sorts of … deals. It hasn’t escaped the notice of other Republicans even. It won’t escape the notice of new Senate leadership. Impeachments are the least of it.
Imagine Biden’s foreign grift but 1000x worse.
And what’s the upshot of all this? What’s propelling Trump’s confidence?
In part, despite the cascade of disappointments, it has to be that the electorate still has a dimmer opinion of Democrats. Dim is a bit understated.
As conservative economist Stephen Moore put it, “Voters may not love Republicans, but increasingly, they fear Democrats.”
Machiavelli coined the term, “better to be feared than loved.” He elucidated further by saying that constant fear would eventually lead to instability, but you get the point.
I think the interpretation of this YouGov poll along with Trump’s historic disapproval numbers is simple: Forget love, it’s better to be merely disdained than feared. It’s way worse to be feared.
Despite the recent trend lines, the historic lines are still in the positive for the GOP.
New, group, and gifted subscriptions are on sale. It’s a great time to join if you haven’t already.
Voter trust for all the kitchen table issues – inflation, the economy, crime, rent – and even national issues like immigration and national security, are still decidedly with Republicans. As former Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker put it, staunching the blood loss this upcoming November isn’t that tall a task, “assuming conservatives can get back on message.”
In the meantime, Democrats polled overwhelmingly – by a 3:1 margin – saying America should not be the dominant power of the west. That is insane. They remain committed to presiding over lawlessness and violence. They’ll fight to the death over institutional castration and mutilation of children. Their language is impenetrable, confusing and subversive. They’ll free the criminals and prosecute the heroes who step between the lawlessness and peaceful citizens.
They are, in short and at first blush, outwardly crazy.
And given the opportunity, as we all know and so does the electorate, we’d be sent to the Gulags should they succeed. Abnormality rewarded or ignored. Normalcy outlawed.
Busy, every day people might not know all the details, but they reflexively know there’s something not quite right with the political left. Something downright vile and destructive.
They might not like Republicans. They’re tired of the incompetence and do nothing nature of the GOP. They probably disdain them with every fiber. Watching the paralysis over the SAVE Act, I can certainly relate.
But the prospect of right wing leadership doesn’t cause kneejerk spasms of fear.
At least for now, that’s a feeling reserved solely for the left. Hopefully, as Walker put it, Trump and the GOP will get on message.
