THE RADICAL SUBURBAN WOMAN
This is the danger of whipping up otherwise normal women into a political frenzy
Hey y’all, welcome back to Unfit to Print.
An ICE agent shot and killed a female protester yesterday in Minnesota. The Department of Homeland Security says she committed an act of “domestic terror” and was trying to kill the officers by running them over with her car. Critics argue the woman was trying to flee the scene and that the officers weren’t in danger.
Let’s get into it.
THE RADICAL SUBURBAN WOMAN
This past weekend I drove out to my home state to watch my nephew compete in his first wrestling match.
My brother wrestled for probably a decade. I joined the team for two seasons when I was 5 or 6. Imagine little baby Amber wearing a singlet with a t-shirt underneath, hair tied up in a scrunchie trying to takedown boys. Very funny and cute.
Attending my nephew’s meet was a blast from the past. It was amazing how little had changed in 20 years. Officials still write each wrestler’s match numbers on their hand in Sharpie, a volunteer taps the ref’s back with a towel to signal the end of a period, family watches intently from the stands, and bored little girls gather with coloring books under the bleachers to pass the time.
The only thing that was different was the match scores were presented digitally rather than with little flip cards on the folding tables.
I bring this up because this is the kind of normal thing small town and suburban people used to do on the weekend. No noses in phones, no politics, just regular family activities.
Unfortunately, it seems to be less common these days. Grandmas, moms, and aunts spend less time with their families and more time “protesting fascism.”
Driving into work a few weeks ago, I saw a gaggle of older women carrying signs complaining about the proposed Arch that Trump wants to put near Memorial Bridge. Many of the “No Kings” protesters who gather outside state capitol buildings and stand on overpasses with Ukraine flags are women.
And the person who lost her life in the ICE shooting in Minneapolis was a 37-year-old mom.
A decade ago it would have been unthinkable that the mother of a six-year-old child, even if she had “she/her” pronouns in her bio, would use her SUV to block federal law enforcement officials and then accelerate in their direction as they surrounded her car.
Maybe she’d whisper with friends about her distaste for Trump at swim meets or send a donation to a pro-immigrant group. But playing chicken with ICE agents carrying guns and then peeling off, nearly dragging an officer with her? No chance.
The left will say women are waking up to the unique threat posed by the Trump administration. That they have no choice but to engage in increasingly radical behavior to stop him. Protest has its place, but this wasn’t protest. It was obstruction. It was illegal. And it was really fucking stupid.
An obvious explanation for the jump from women marching in Handmaid’s outfits and pussy hats to tangling with police is that the left has created a permission structure for them to do so. They have repeatedly framed the Trump administration as an existential threat to every American. The women of The View have made clear they hardly think it’s acceptable to even be friends with a Trump supporter. Democrats cried for a year that women were going to die from Roe v. Wade being overturned. They’ve repeatedly claimed without evidence that American citizens are being deported. They’ve accused Trump of killing harmless fishermen in the Caribbean.
Late night host Jimmy Kimmel egged on the lawlessness and violence by holding up a shirt that said “Donald J. Trump is gonna kill you” on his show following the Minneapolis shooting.
Trump is gonna kill you.
Women are risk averse by nature. We try to avoid conflict. But that is for the purpose of self-preservation. If we are convinced someone is imminently trying to hurt us, we react very strongly. Women “react to threats with greater fear, disgust, and sadness” and “have relatively heightened protective reactions compared to males,” according to some research.
This is the danger of whipping up otherwise normal women into a political frenzy. And someone lost their life because of it.

"But playing chicken with ICE agents carrying guns and then peeling off, nearly dragging an officer with her?" This just not true. I support ICE 100%. The woman was interfering with ICE and had been doing so all day. She was blocking the road. The ICE officer stood in front of her car and they were indeed trying to arrest her. She didn't like that, was indeed avoiding arrest and was trying to Get away. Facts. But did she have to die? She did not "nearly dragging an officer with her..." FALSE. He stepped out of the way, had drawn his weapon and as she left he fired and she was killed. He put himself in front of the car and as the videos show he stepped out of the way (may have been bumped) but he was in control. Is it legal to shoot a fleeing suspect? I Don't think so. I feel sad for this officer as his life is likely ruined and he will likely be found guilty of excessive force. By no one's opinion - not mine or other or StateoftheDay matters - all just opinions. We'll see.
