Unfit to Print: THESE ARE THE LEFT’S NEW HEROES? PART I
Emblazoned on Platner’s chest was a Nazi tattoo, which he dismissed as a silly drunken thing he did with his military buddies while serving abroad.
Hey y’all, welcome to another edition of Unfit to Print.
Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner has officially covered up his Nazi tattoo, but that’s the least of his problems…
THESE ARE THE LEFT’S NEW HEROES? PART I
The Maine oyster farmer’s campaign is exploding spectacularly and the progressives are Very Mad Online.
Platner’s latest scandal involved a video from a family member’s wedding in which he danced shirtless to a Miley Cyrus tune. Emblazoned on Platner’s chest was a Nazi tattoo, which he dismissed as a silly drunken thing he did with his military buddies while serving abroad. Platner claimed he didn’t know it was a Nazi symbol and later vowed to get it removed or covered up — which he has since done.
I was inclined to believe that he didn’t realize the specific skull and crossbones design he got inked was a prominent Nazi symbol, mostly because he doesn’t seem particularly bright. Also, I probably couldn’t tell you what most Nazi symbols aside from a swastika and SS logo look like, and I doubt most Americans could either. However, new reporting indicates Platner was bragging about his “Totenkopf” — the official term for the symbol — to friends back in 2012.
The Democrats insisting the tattoo is disqualifying are doing so because they want the more establishment-friendly Governor Janet Mills to win the primary. The ensuing civil war is something I am keen to egg on because I find Democratic infighting delightful.
I’m also acutely aware of the fact that no progressive would be defending a right-winger who found themselves in a similar situation (in fact, they have tried to cancel Pete Hegseth and a random ICE agent for tattoos that they thought were Nazi symbols but actually weren’t).
The other piece of oppo that some Dems are angry about is a Reddit post from Platner where he asks why black people don’t tip. This is a stereotype that probably anyone who has worked in the service industry would tell you is mostly true and I don’t begrudge anyone noticing patterns and asking questions about societal trends. Big deal.
This is the real problem with Platner that people should be talking about: like most left-wing “populists,” he appears to be a fraud.
Platner is described by left-wing activist and podcaster Emma Vigeland as “authentic[ally] working class.”
Except Platner’s dad was a lawyer with his own private practice who was reprimanded for professional misconduct, ran for local office and as a candidate supported painting crosswalks in LGBT pride colors, and donated $50,000 to Democrats over the years.
His mother owns two restaurants and a gift shop, helped fund Platner’s oyster business, and is apparently his biggest customer.
His grandfather was a renowned modernist architect who graduated from Cornell.
His aunt runs the children’s care facility at Yale New Haven Hospital.
Platner went to private high school. He won the superlative “Most Likely To Start A Revolution” and is holding up a “Free Palestine” sign in the yearbook.
Platner joined the military and after serving multiple tours, he attended George Washington University in D.C. He didn’t finish his education, did several more tours, then returned to Maine in 2016 for treatment for PTSD.
In 2018, he went back to work for the private security company formerly known as Blackwater before insisting he’d finally had enough with war. He settled down in Maine to become an oyster farmer. He got his business off the ground with assistance from a billionaire’s business fund, though he now criticizes billionaires as oppressing “working-class” folks like himself.
Is this a working-class phenom or the son of wealthy left-wing activists who spent his life struggling with his identity before finally creating a false one?
Platner’s uncovered Reddit posts do even more to deny him credibility with real working-class folks. He calls all police “bastards,” describes himself as a communist and an Antifa supersoldier, and says that white rural Americans are stupid and racist.
As an actual daughter of the working class, color me skeptical that Platner has their best interests at heart.
Stay tuned for Part II of this series next week.
