One of the more interesting observations making its way around Twitter in the aftermath of the killing of Alex Pretti was this: American society is becoming Palestinian.

I’m not sure who to credit for this initial take, but Davis Marcus wrote a column about it that makes the case pretty plainly.

“The tactic here is clear as day: organize hordes of people to harass federal agents all day, then cross the line into breaking the law in order to create a flash point, even if that means people have to die.”

The case makes some sense: Tim Walz and Jacob Frey clearly see the lives of their constituents as dispensable if they can be used for political gain. The tactic of provoking a stronger force to create martyrs that can be used to win hearts and minds is a tried and true tactic of the Palestinian movement. All of the same boosters of Palestinian resistance to Israel are generally now on the Abolish ICE train.

I think that leaves a lot of meat on the bone though: We aren’t seeing the “Palestinianization” of American society, but a broader third-world infection in our politics that isn’t slowing down.
